• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Is the Smart Battery just the type of the battery or is it part of the radio/an option in the radio. I have an XTS2500-3. Thank you!

Are you referring to IMPRES, or something else? OEM Motorola battery, or aftermarket?

The "Smart" Battery for Motorola is Lithium Ion Impress. There is no special Flashcode needed on the radio, you just need an impress battery. They are fairly expensive. When you get the Impress Battery, you should update your radio in CPS and add the "Battery" Menu, it's extremely easy. This will tell you certain info about your battery that can be helpful.

Also if you really like seeing data, you could buy a used Impress 6 gang Display charger that displays various information while the battery is charging. You need minimum charger firmware of 3.4, preferably 3.9. But honestly it's probably overkill if you only have 1 radio.

Note that a "real" IMPRES battery should have IMPRES, in cap bold italics on the label (note spelling). There are various levels of imitation going on out there, including a battery company named Impress, and people selling batteries with "impress" or even "IMPRES" in the title and/or description, like this and this. I've no experience in whether they actually bother to clone the circuitry that's present in the real deal, but I doubt it, and wouldn't want to find out the hard way.

I don't know if it's legit, but older stuff might have an "impres" stylized logo in lower-case with "Intelligent Battery", like the box of this one, but I see the upper-case logo on the battery in the window of the box (though the out-of-box pic is of a different battery than the boxed one).

Or just buy the batteries from a reputable supplier of genuine Motorola parts, and skip the attempt at forensic examination of the font on a label, which can be easily faked. KISS.

Notice the “p” has a larger hump and the “s” has a larger middle section. Obviously a fake. Or not.

I agree, just purchase from a reputable place and you’ll be fine.
