I am considering purchasing the BCD436HP, but am wondering if it is worth it to also purchase through Scanner Master either their Basic or Pro software CD for it. Or, is the included Sentinel Software adequate? Any advice from members will be appreciated. I live in Genesee Co. Michigan. Thanks.

It's your choice - but IMHO , Sentinel does all you need, ARC adds some features, may be easier if you have used previously.

As pfask said, only two choices, for now. I'm just hoping that FreeScan will come out with a new software for the 436!

From the FreeScan site "The BCD436HP and BCD536HP are unsupported and will never be supported". Not sure if he will change his mind.

I would hold off with your purchase of the 436 until Uniden starts to show some interest in supporting the 436 (one of their flagship scanners).

I've used both ARC and Sentinel.

ARC does some things that Sentinel does not, such as justifying and capitalizing tags. The PRO version will do Virtual Control and logging of transmissions.

Sentinel does some things that ARC does not, such as downloading/updating firmware and database. Sentinel also will edit profiles where ARC does not.

So it boils down to what I'm going to do when it comes to which "tool" I'm going to use.

The trick is to be sure files are coordinated. So if I change somthing with software A, I'll read and save those changes with software B.

Sentinel does everything I need to do in programming. Running PROSCAN for logging and remote no problems here either. I have also tried and liked scanner monitor that worked fine with my BCD436HP with no problems. Just think GRE RS Whistler all made scanners you had to buy software for and nobody had any problems with that Motorola sells Radios that cost over $1000.00 and if you can buy the software it is over $200.00 and nobody has problems with that. Uniden is giving us free software that works with the BCD436HP so I do not see a problem. If you do not like the tires on your new car you replace them but you do not blame GM or FORD.

As others have said, Sentinel does everything I can want, and there are lots of great videos explaining the different features / how to using sentinel on YouTube.

I also use Proscan on my my PC, for logging. While the built in record on the 436 is damn nice, using Proscan to put the audio into the same audio file based on the department is awesome. I get 1 single file with all the fire chatter, 1 for the police, etc.

So, Sentinel for programming, and Proscan for playing :)
