Looking for help on getting some software to program my 780XLT. Just looking for something basic that will let me program freqs and the channel tags. Its gets old trying to use the little dial to program names for all the channels. Is the scancat software good enough for this? I also have a pro-97 and pro-84 radio shack handhelds. I'm not after computer control or anything special. Just would like to able to enter freqs and name tagging. I also just got a new computer with windows7. Do i need any type of special cable for the 780xlt? Just a usb to serial will work? Thanks for any info.

Re the USB-serial cable; yes, there are many COTS (common off the shelf) models and distributors that will work. However the big hangup is if you are running Win7 64 bit. Not many distributors are supplying drivers for it yet.

However you can try the list found here - nowhere near complete, but it's a start...

Connecting scanners via USB - The RadioReference Wiki

You might want to look at Device Manager now and become familiar with what COM ports are taken up now - before you try to load anything. That way when you do, it should stand out like a sore thumb. It's not unusual for some devices to load their drivers and stay resident even if they're not actually connected (anyone remember the old DOS TSR drivers?). This is also something you will need to watch out for

Best Regards...Mike
