Hi,
First, let me be honest, I am not tech savy and scanners have gotten more complicated since my younger years! My daughter bought me the Whistler WS1040 handheld scanner. She paid for the 180 day subscription to RR after we both gave up figuring out how to program the scanner. Now, it says I need software to get the frequencies to my scanner with this computer and cable hooked to the scanner. I have a Dell Chromebook that is the most basic computer. She has a MacBook and we saw that wouldn't work. This Chromebook will not allow me to download the ARC software. Please help and guide an old man that just wants to use his birthday and Christmas present. Thank you in advance!!!!

Not sure where you are located and what systems are available to you. I do not believe the scanner will do phase 2 trunked so if that's what your country is on you might want to exchange it. Not sure what your looking to listen to and there may be more that scanner won't handle.

Most of the software is windows based. There are ways to get some windows programs to run on Chromebook and Mac.

Welcome to the RR forums unccdad. Please reply back with your location & agencies of interest so we can consult the database to see what's monitorable in your area

This Chromebook will not allow me to download the ARC software.
You need a Windows machine to do scanner programming of any sort. Parallels may be a viable option for your daughter's Mac (I don't have a personally-owned Mac nor have I tested Arc software in a virtual environment so I can't speak on it firsthand) but native Windows is your best bet.

I do not believe the scanner will do phase 2 trunked
The WS1040 only does Phase-I. Although FDMA (mode "D") talkgroups on a Phase-II system will also work

If I remember correctly few years ago on iMac you need Parallels ver 18.xx and above, also I didnt have success running Ezscan on M2 chip it run Windows Ark version, best to use older Mac with Intel chip. (ps No longer own iMac) For best comp ability stick with Wintel laptop.

It would help to know your city, county, and state and the systems and agencies you want to monitor. We will be able to look up your location in the database to see what your scanner is capable of monitoring. Your city or town is useful to determine the best site or sites on trunked systems.
