Is Somerset county actually using P25 Phase II? I have a BCD396XT (no phase II support) and OP25 (phase II implemented) running on linux and hear the same activity on both.

Look at the system in the database and check the Mode column. If you see T, that means the talkgroup is TDMA.

This is the reason I am asking. The database shows Somerset county as P25 Phase II and tags of T yet I am hearing them on the BCD396XT which is not supposed to be able to do TDMA P25 Phase II.

From what I understand only the 700 MHz side of the system is capable of Phase 2. The 500 MHz portion is apparently all Phase 1. Last time I was up that way last year the 700 side had Phase 1 and Phase 2.

If they are simultaneously transmitting on phase I and II on the 700 band then that explains why the scanner is picking it as well. I need to looking into the OP25 code to see if it has a way to display the mode it picking up.

There is quite a bit of Phase-II traffic on the 500 side as of this summer.

I believe all repeaters on both sites are GTR8000's, and the only limiting factor for how the TG is actually being used is wether the subscriber radio is Phase-II capable.

A single older XTS affiliating to a TG will knock it back to Phase-I.

Yeah the system is a combination of Phase 1 and Phase 2. The 700Mhz simulcast broadcasts only in Phase 2 the majority of the time although as W2SJW mentioned all it takes is a radio on the system to be phase 1 and it kicks back.

Whenever a talkgroup is in Phase 1 it will broadcast on the 500 system so randomly you can get some of the tg's that are usually only on the 700Mhz phase 2 like Bridgewater PD and Hillsborough.

Eventually everyone will be migrated over to Phase 2 and at that point most likely all 700 as well.

All of the Fire EMS & OEM channels broadcast in Phase 1 on the 500, so if you just wanna listen to those i suggest only monitoring the 500 system as you wont get any hits on the 700. For listening to PD i have found the happy medium for monitoring all the tg's is to set the site hold time to 2 seconds for the 500 & 700 and putting them in a their own separate system.
