I am doing what I do every several months and hoping to get the latest information.
Does anyone have a clue as to when Trenton will transform from vselp to something I can listen to??? I have been told to buy an ASTRO SABER in order to hear them. I have searched EBAY and I can not find an ASTO that works on the 800mhz band.
I would apreciate any coments or gossip.
Thank You

As I understand it, Trenton PD will upgrade from VSLEP to, presumably, a P-25 digital format once re-banding takes place. (1) When that will be remains to be seen, and (2) there's no guarantee that they won't stay encrypted once the change formats, whenever that will be...

Trenton is not encrypted and never have been they are using vselp in the clear.

However, IIRC, VSLEP is not recievable by any current scanner available, even the digital ones. You may be correct in that TPD is "in the clear" but a 396 won't be able to monitor TPD (at least that's how I understand it; if I'm incorrect, feel free to clarify).

That's one reason I've never bothered to program Trenton TRS into my scanner; for Trenton Fire, I just have the conventional simulcast freqs in my scanner.

Carbine is correct. Lets not confuse a digital mode wtih encryption. Anyone with an 800 MHz radio containing the VSELP vocoder can decode Trenton.

Also, there is no reason you can't program the Trenton TRS into your 396 and just put in the fire talkgroups. They are analog and it makes it easier to listen when they have multiple jobs going. Furthermore, they do not simulcast all of their fire talkgroups in UHF so you are missing anything on Fire-3 which they use for rescues, extrications, etc.
