By Westwood Fire Company January 11, 2011 On Tuesday, January 11th, 2011 Rescue 44 was dispatched at 1829 to assist the Modena Fire Company with a vehicle accident with reported entrapment on Youngsburg Road south of Ash Street in South Coatesville Borough.
The incident was initially reported with unknown injuries at 1827 just as an evening snow fall began. Following the initial dispatch of Modena Fire and EMS units, Rescue 44 and Medic 93 were added once the report of occupants trapped was received.
Rescue 44 responded four minutes after dispatch at 1833.
Chief Perine of the Modena Fire Company arrived on the scene and established "Youngsburg Road Command" at 1836. He requested two additional Ambulances and a second Rescue to be dispatched to the scene.
Youngsburg Command requested Rescue 44 to respond to the scene via Youngsburg Road. The two vehicles involved in the head-on collision both had occupants trapped or confined to the vehicle requiring extrication.
Tac 44 and Ambulance 44-1 responded at 1838 to assist with additional manpower and EMS personnel.
Traffic 44 also responded and assisted with traffic control at the intersection of Youngsburg Road and Lower Gap Road.
Chief McWilliams, Deputy Chief Deckman, Assistant Chief Scott, Battalion Chief Sly, and EMS Chief Biddle all responded to the scene in addition to the apparatus and assisted with extrication and medical care.
Crews from Rescue 44 immediately deployed cribbing for stabilization of the vehicles, while the crew from Modena Tac 37 set up to begin extrication of one vehicle. Rescue 44's crew began to remove the roof of the second vehicle with the "Jaws of Life" hydraulic rescue tools. The driver's door of the vehicle was also removed to provide additional access to the patient.
The first two occupants were extricated at 1848, the third at 1853, and the final occupant was extricated by 1859.
EMS crews from Modena and the Washington Hose Company of Coatesville along with Medic 93 transported victims to both Brandywine Hospital and Paoli Hospital's Trauma Unit.
Fire/Rescue crews remained on the scene to assist the police department, clean up the debris, and review the rescue operations.
All Westwood units cleared the scene at 1952. Units: Rescue 44, Tac 44, Traffic 44, and Ambulance 44-1
