Greetings all;
Vacationing this week and am toying with a last minute trip to see the launch.
I'm just going to drive down and back to Indiana.

Looking for info on how close I might be allowed to get without actually getting on the Cape.

McDonalds parking lot or whatever I just want to be able to see and hear it.
Thanks all,
Stu

Anybody in Palm Beach know of any confirmed repeaters that may be re-broadcasting shuttle audio?

146.94 rebroadcasts shuttle audio here.

looks like you have some extra time.

personally, i'd find something OTHER than a shuttle launch to make that drive down here my friend - especially since they cancel the launch at the drop of a hat.

Back from Fla

I'm back. Just over 1000 miles each way. Scrub is just part of the game. The Space Coast ATIS 120.625 kept saying scattered at 3 all day long. (wrong) I got some of the KSC stuff but apparently did not have the splits/offsets set correctly so I had to manually scroll and then I could actually get some audio.( Pro 96)

146.940 was a very good "in the know" freq to have closer to launch. During the day not much happening.

126.6500 were direct comms from the airborne weather spotter and KSC. If you have this you will know if they have the minimums to make it go.

McDonalds lot was a perfect spot. Met lots of cool people (helicopter pilots training at Adventures, retired millitary guys talking about Apollo etc.)

During the ride I had a 2045 2052 and my 96 on duty so listening to the various states was cool.

I will probably come back in Feb/March if the weather looks

Damn, I cant believe you went all the way to FL and didnt see it! I live in Gainesville,FL about 200+ miles from the KSC. I went out to my driveway for the launch tonight, keep in mind I'm 200-225 miles away. When the countdown hit 0:00, the horizon lit up orange, then about 10 seconds later i saw the ball of fire going into the night sky. I could see the Solid Rocket Boosters split off, no binoculars or anything. I couldnt believe how bright and big it was for being so far away. It was really something to see, I couldnt imagine what it looked like actually there.

Anywho, I give you major kudos for the road trip.

Discovery Launch

We watched the ascent from halfway between Clearwater and Tampa. We saw the glow from the engine ignition, and then the flame from the shuttle rising (I checked randmcnally.com, we're about 130 miles or so from the Cape). Thanks to cloud cover, we missed the booster separation :(. It was still a sight to behold.

I had my PRO-91 on 145.230 for the audio rebroadcast, and my PRO-97 w/ Diamond RH77CA scanning the UHF air-to-ground. I caught about 4 comms from Discovery several seconds apart from each other. I wonder if NASA sends QSL's? :)

Too bad I missed it I like watching the shuttle go off.. I was down there like 2 yrs ago and took a small tour there pretty neat. I like to do the full tour my self that might take all day LOL. I have some pictures too have to find them. When I was a kid back up in Windy City I saw the shuttle at night that was cool. I had a scope and saw it better. Too bad I miss all this stuff since I work nights and its hard to see them sometimes during the day... I'm still looking for some Freq for Saint Augustine Fl area too I have a scanner that goes from 1kz-2 gigs no break even picks up 600mhz too That is Alinco DJX10-T non trunking......

I thought I was going to miss the launch, due to a business trip that had me in Houston all week, but thanks to the scrubs, I got to see it from my front yard after I got home.

We were all at the station, just north of Gainesville and went outside right at liftoff. The whole sky definitely turned orange. I also saw the boosters fall off. Best launch I've seen in like 10 years.

I live in Tally, and I have never seen a launch. I think the best one would have to be at night or dusk. Need to go see it one day I guess. It would be nice to be about 15 to 20 miles off shore to see the lift off.

Listening to ELV and STS Launch ops...

I know it's after the STS116 flight, but FYI: http://kscops.com streams the KSC and CCAFS Base APCO25 Operations, mixing in the NASA PAO commentary and Shuttle Comms as launch approaches, some on-orbit ISS/STS segments and then the Landing Ops.

Delta and other non-classified ELV (non-manned) Launches are often covered as they happen.

The KSC/CCAFS Base Ops can be pretty interesting even during routine and late-night chatter... :) (CCAFS is Cape Canaveral AF Station.)
