I was sitting here listening to my 996T and the internal speaker died. I get siganl strength and it's stopping on channels but no audio. The earphone jack works so I'm wondering if the external speaker will work!! I think it should but just wanted to double check

one way to check.. plug your earphones into that external jack and find out! It could have just rattled out.. its just a plug (inside the unit) unlikely but worth a look

or the problem with the 536 is so horrible it spreads to older 996T units as well.

me...i just

use computer speakers for that whole home sound.
my 396t and my girlfriends 396xt has cut out and comes back when i insert a plug into the jack
it seems to be a cheap part and many others have had it too
others have replaced speakers, some sent them back to be repaired
i am guessing that the headphone jack is the downfall of these radios
so stick a plug in and hope that the sound comes back.
