Encountered this interesting story, hope my information does not repeat a post. This story is quite fascinating, except the author does not have our same passion for those horrid "disruptions" that occur far above us. Even though the data is being gathered from the Martian "atmosphere", the implication is that E-layer phenomena here is alike, except that in the Martian context it is happening all the time and thus data generation is facilitated greatly.
I think some radio listeners might attest to there being a "rift" as described, but if as fleeting as an opening, perhaps we just get an intuitive suggestion of it.
The abstract at the end might make more sense to the average radio listener, as opposed to the story, but that is just an opinion.
