I live in Mascoutah, in st. clair county. I had a scanner a while back but didnt use it for very long. I am planning on getting a new one but when i got rid of my old one I heard that st clair county was changing to a nextel system or something like that. I dont know a whole lot about scanners but I like to listen and would like to learn. If anyone could recommend a scanner that would be good for my area that would be great. Or if you could tell me any information that I need to know before I get one. Thanks Brandon

St Clair county has the first up and running Starcom node. Except that it's actually kind of a combined system between Starcom and St Clair's systems. It's digital (apco25) and I think a 9600 baud control channel. You can scan it - but you'll need a 800 Mhz trunk tracking radio which does both digital and 9600 baud control channel trunk tracking.

Since this may all be jibberish to you, I'd suggest a Uniden 296D, 796D or Radio Shack Pro-96. Or, wait until the 396 from Uniden comes out later this year, which may well be you best bet.

There's info on the system here at radio reference in the Illinois database section.
