Hello to everyone. The last few days I have been seeing the State Freq of 453.300 key up with a PL tone of 159.8. There has been no conversation so far just a few seconds of open mike. This has keyed up several times a day, and appears to be a repeater; however, I have no way to confirm that other that the signal is very clean and no white noise. I live in Morgan Co. near West Liberty, and here in the mountains simplex does not go very far. I am also hearing the KMVE with a PL of 162.2. I am using a Pro-96 and it appears to be an analog signal because I do not hear the Digital Buzz when the radio is in CTCSS mode. As I said, I have yet to hear a conversation on this freq and PL, just open carriers. Any thoughts? I will keep listening. Thanks for any help.

Your scanner is probably giving an occasional false reading of the 162.2 tone.

Maybe, I do get the same false with both the Pro-96 and Pro-97. I don't have a non-GRE scanner to check it by. Seems that both scanner wouldn't give the same false code.

Subaudible tones are often difficult to decode "off the air" (even with professional equipment) if the associated transmitter is adjusted for less than about 750hz tone deviation. Many users of "high" tones run 500hz or less, so there could be your trouble.

IMHO, there is not much of a chance that some other licensee would be on 453.300 and even less likely that they would make the technical error of using the adjacent tone to 162.2hz which appears to be used by KVE/KSP and others.
