Alabama EDACS
Update (8/14/98): The Troopers (statewide) are to remain on VHF for the time being, the implementation of a statewide EDACS system is on hold indefenantly. Most of the DPS administration, service division, and ABI are using Southern LINC radios, but Highway patrol will remain on VHF. Right now, all they have are portable radios, and they should be using them as we speak. This is the very same EDACS system that Montgomery County Sheriff is using, and the Montgomery Trooper post is simulcasting on VHF and EDACS everytime they transmit. The troopers are using VHF for mobile communications, and the 800 portable radios when they are out of the car. The same thing is being done at the Mobile post, and the troopers are using the Mobile County EDACS system. The only stand alone EDACS system that DPS has is on Mount Cheaha, and the users are unknown. It is programmed in all of the troopers EDACS radios , so I guess if they were in range of it they could use it. DPS also has a portable, five frequency EDACS system and a crank up tower on their mobile command unit.. That system is also programmed in all the Troopers radio's. It is believed that the system is used at the Speedway in Talledega, with the EDACS system being the main form of communication for all the troopers who work the event. The DPS has also discussed putting a mobile repeater in the Trooper cars in the rural areas of the state, to crossband the 800 portable to the VHF mobile radio. This would use the conventional side of the EDACS portable, giving the troopers the capability to talk to the post when they are away from the car. They wouldn't need to do this in Mobile, Baldwin or Montgomery Counties because the Troopers can talk to the post on the EDACS system now. I remember hearing that the Trooper Major that was pushing for the statewide EDACS system retired and the effort to switch over to the EDACS system has stalled.
