Thanks to a interoperability grant from the feds the state is extending the VIPER to the western counties. The grant will provide sites and site upgrades and various other things. The local counties will probably be putting some of thier current equipment into them along with a link to VIPER from one of their current UHF or VHF channels. Don't look for the western counties to go to VIPER anytime soon for thier operations because they know 800 is not very good in the mountains. The 11 western counties tried to get the grant themselves as a group and set up a VHF UHF intercounty system that would have worked very well but the state decided they needed the money more for thier pet VIPER, which works well in flatlands but crap here in the mountains. Usual political stuff.
