EDACS is not p25 trunking. Only conventional pairs can be p25. Mot and edacs trunking are very diferent and not compatible.

EDACS is not P25, however in some M/A-COM literature they have referred to there P25 products and systems under the EDACS "brand", so it can get confusing.

P25 can be conventional or trunked.
P25 can even be simplex and not need a channel pair.

Motorola (SmartNet) and M/A-COM (EDACS) trunking are very different, but Motorola Astro25 (P25) and M/A-COM P25IP (P25) trunking are compatible.

Are you sure about the last statement?

I have SEEN Motorola Astro 25 radios woring on a M/A-COM P25IP network, and I have SEEN M/A-COM P25IP radios woring on a Motorola Astro 25 network.

But, no I am not "sure"*.

*P.S. I am not sure, because some one here will start asking about putting Motorola stations on a M/A-COM controller.
Then if that was ever fixed, it would be about putting a Motorola transmitter module inside a M/A-COM transmitter chassis.
Then if that was ever fixed, it would be about putting a Motorola software load into a M/A-COM device.

Compatibility is about layers, and those who want to say it is not there will always go to the "next" layer to prove they are right.

Why MA/COM vs SAFE-T?

Historically, Steuben was a GE shop. A high ranking GE official was a Steuben county native as were some of the partners in D&L Communications, the GE reseller for this part of the state. As the story goes, Steuben was selected as a Beta site for EDCAS because of the challenging terrain, D&L's committment to the product, and the (then) Director of Communication's religous loyalty to the GE brand. The terrain aspect was important because many trunking detrators said 800MHz frequencies wouldn't work in hilly, wooded, or lake terrain.

The preference for GE / Ericcson / Ma/Com / (insert next week's name here) has continued to this day, along with a perception that a) if we're not the masters of the system, that's bad, b) if Indy is in control, that's worse, c) GE made us feel like a valued customer while Mot considered us too small to care about, and d) we're special up here and have to do things differently.
