Not sure if there are any loyal Global News viewers here, but there was a great story on the News Hour at 6 on Friday night. An ambulance dispatcher who has worked in Toronto for 30 years retired... and Global did a story on his career. Really calm and collected guy, and you could tell that he loved his job -- and always had a bottle of Kool Aid and Oreo's on his desk.

I'll try to get a dub of the story and post it up here... you guys would like it.

Right at the end of the story, one of the paramedic's went on the radio and said that it was great to have worked with Steve for so many years. Steve came back on the air and said that it was all worth it because of people like him... very heart felt. The reporter ended the story, and Steve hung up the phone by saying, "Bye bye" and that was the end of the piece. Really well done story... and no, I try not to be biased. :)

Nice story ! In the video at the 1:10 mark, what are those red, yellow, green (and white ???) lights for ? Are they related to some of the background chimes we hear when dispatchers are on the air ? Same for ems units, sometimes I hear what sounds like a siren, low to high pitch, but it's not the exterior vehicle sirens. Anyone know ?

Those lights are for call volumes and such.

The siren you hear in the ambulance is the Mobicad/MODAT (computer). It makes that siren sound whenever they receive a message / new call.

The best is the siren that goes off on the Motorola system when a user presses the emergency button. Gee that's annoying... guess it's supposed to be.
