Had a Ham Radio Operator following a car with a antenna on the back of the car with a bumper sticker on the back of the car that read monitoing 140.600.Does anyone know who or what this frequency is used for or who is on this frequency. This was in Indianapolis,Indiana on Weds 8-11-2010 .I am thinking Federal use maybe in the local area. Can anyone share with me any ideas on this.Very Best Requards,Tim DeLong W9NES *Monitoring all of Metro Indianapolis/Marion County and all of Central Indiana*

140.600mhz. would more than likely be allocated for military or cap so he's either a numbskull bootlegger,or he could be a cap aux. member.

140.6 MHz is a military allocation to the Department of Defense, so it depends on your definition of "federal". You didn't mention what type of vehicle it was, or a license plate type, so and details as to who this was is going to be hard to guess at.

As to why he is advertising what frequency he is monitoring, it could be a vehicle that is operating at a military range area and he is advising units on the range how to call him if needed. Just a thought...

That freq. was in a portable motorola repeater in a FEMA truck I took an invited short tour of several years back. I am sure because I was writing freqs down like mad before the FEMA guy came back from a potty break---It was like a big clamshell suitcase and had the duplexer in the bottom half.

143.6000 was for years a FEMA Allocation for the VHF Repeaters

Now exclusive to Civil Air Patrol

The last FEMA activity from MA Maynard was 2007/2008 for me.

This was not a Chase Car for a triathlete during practice. The sticker said the following as The Ham radio Operator gave this to me while I was talking to him.The Sticker says "Monitoring 140.600" The sticker said nothing other than that.

I'm gonna guess that it's one of two things....

1) Somebody did it for a joke to poke at bumper stickers displaying they are monitoring 146.52.

2) It actually is the standard calling frequency for some other country.

I have never heard of any other country with 2 meter ham band allocations outside of 144-148 MHz and in ITU region 1 the 2 meter band is only from 144-146.

You are probably right about it being a joke, if the sticker even really exists at all.

It was probably just put there to provoke hams who get behind the car and drive them nuts as to why anyone would be monitoring 140.6. And as an added plus it has now provoked this forum post as well. :)

Thanks but this is what the Ham Told me over the air.He is a Trustworthy source and when he tells you he is seeing something he is telling the truth and I believe him.The bumper sticker said again"Monitoring 140.600Mhz Not 146.52.We already know about 146.52 as a simplex 2 meter freq as I have been licensed since 1992 and I monitor that freq when I am out in my car.
