It is difficult to display a certificate of completion over the phone. Spotter numbers make identifying NWS Trained spotters quick and easy.

EDIT: I never received any certificates or anything like that... Seems like a wonderful way to waste taxpayer dollars.

Oh yeah, what a huge waste of taxpayer money. They probably spend what, a whole three or four cents on a piece of paper and a little ink? All that for some guy who only freely gives his time, money for gas, etc... and use of his own equipment to try and provide a little advance storm notice to the public, for no pay and usually little, if any, thanks.

Some WFO's give spotter talks to literally thousands of people in one springtime.

My local spotter talk had to be held in an auditorium this year... And I don't live in a major metropolitan area.

Are you attending the spotter talk for the information or training? Or are you attending for the warm fuzzy feeling and a piece of paper to hang on the wall?

I would prefer that their extra money go to keeping all of our WFO's open, and the people who work there employed.

My "warm fuzzy feeling" comes from knowing that what I do as a spotter helps to save lives. I just think it's a nice gesture on the part of the NWS to give the certs to the people who volunteer their time, money and equipment. The money spent on the certificates, I'm sure, wouldn't be anywhere near enough to keep one person employed, let alone keep any WSO's open.

There is no "Certification" in skywarn. People who claim to have any sort of certification have bestowed that title upon themselves.

just noticed this thread is a year old. Oops... no sense re-opening this can of worms.

I recently took the test. I received a pdf cert and a wallet info card with a cert number. All in pdf.
