Streaming Software

Hi all,
I know there have been some posts in the past about this, but they have been few and sporatic. I was thinking maybe we could put together in one place (maybe this could be a sticky even) of what we use to stream our audio feeds so that others can find them easier.

I run 2 (a 3rd in beta test) feeds from my place.

Feed 1: Northern Kentucky Public Saftey: Runs Teamspeak, and Ventrilo.

Feed 2: Hamilton County Amatuer Radio Public Service Corps: Runs Windows Media Encoder 9.0 and Ventrilo

Feed 3: (beta Test) City of CIncinnati Fire Department: Runs WME 9.0 and Ventrilo.

I use the 8 slot Ventrilo server for my personal monitoring of all my feeds. That way I know something is wrong.

Does the "Ventrilo" operate like TeamSpeak?

Exactly Like Teamspeak. You can set it up for voice activated transmit. It was designed for the same thing Teamspeak was (gaming) and actuially works better at that the Teamspeak does because it doesn't take as much memory to run. I think it also has better audio Quality.

The problem with ventrilo (and the reason I moved my Voice users from it to teamspeak) is that the free version of Vent only allows you an 8 slot server. this is great for me for monitoring all my feeds, but bad in the sense of only allowing 8 people to chat at once, when you could have 10-20 during a gameing tournament or session (buddy of mine typically is in a 50-60 person instance on World of Warcraft).

To get a bigger vent server, you have to pay (and agree to a minimum of 1000 slots and then each year be able to expand alittle.) or rent so many slots from a rental company and that ranges anywayere from 5 bucks a month to 500 bucks a month depending on number of slots and hosting company. Since I am too cheap and Teamspeak will allow me up to 1000 for free, I moved everyone over there...

I run Winamp 5.X with the shoutcast plugin and shoutcast source program. Go through no-ip so my dynamic ip doesn't screw it up.

My only problem is I couldn't get an asx file to open in wmp instead of displaying as a txt file in the browser. Apparently there is something server-side I can do to fix it but don't have access to those options.

I've never tried any other streaming programs, and it seems lots of the people here don't like shoutcast for some reason. I guess what I don't like is that winamp uses a lot of RAM
