I no nothing about scanners but looking to give one as a gift. The primary use will be used for NASCAR races but I would to be able to give one that would be multifunctional, weather, marine -VHF , police, fire... and whatever other features/uses they have. Price range $200-$300. From doing internet research the Uniden SC230 seems to be the new toy on the market.

I welcome any suggestions/comments from people with some scanner experience.

Another one you can look into would be the Radio Shack PRO-99 but the new Uniden does look to be the top dog in racing radios right now.

I forgot to mention that since you are planning on using it for more then just racing and if your local police/fire are on a trunking or digital system then this will change the type of radio that you are looking for.

I am biased, but once it is out the sc230 will be the race scanner to have. The SC230 will more or less be a non trunking bc246t and will come preprogrammed with NASCAR, Busch, Craftsman Truck, Arca and a host of other racing leagues. I am not the biggest fan of NASCAR but I am thinking of going to a race next season just to try the SC230 out in its intended enviroment.

I know that tis is a little off topic but I had an idea.

The Ultimate Race Scanner...

It would be like all other race scanners but it would also be able to be programmed like the RACE Cievers (Pager-like Scanners) and it would also have a 3" LCD TV with limited replay, like TIVO.

The LCD would be for TV and the Built- in 2.1MP camera.

The replay would replay the scanner recieved audio as well so you could better deciepher those obscure radio transmissions from the spotters or drivers.

The ICOM has some of these features. I would bet that thing would sell bigtime!

$550...

People would buy it too!

the sc230 for sure. If you want trunking go w/ the bc246t. It has enough memory to store ALL NNCS, NBS, NCTS freqs (primary and backup) plus any local PS, air, business you want to hear, PLUS all of your home listening needs. It has Close Call and decodes CTCSS and DCS. you can't go wrong, especially for ~ $220

I would like a race scanner that would have a 3" LCD TV on it so it could moniter the in car cameras and voice traffic all at the same time.
