I'm looking into getting a scanner that will handle police, sheriff, fire and EMS for Surry County and surrounding areas. Can someone recommend one that will work?

Hello and welcome. Are you wanting a base or handheld scanner. Surry looks like my county as not being encrypted. I use two of these and they work very well.

Hello there the scanner listed above will not pick the NC Viper System that is used in Surry County a with a phase 2 coming if not already there I would suggest Uniden Sds 100 or Sds 200. Main trading out of Paris tx has a good price on them right now

I’d really like a handheld

While the BCD325P2 will likely work for Surry County, keep in mind that all scanners except the Uniden SDS line struggle with simulcast systems. If you plan on ever monitoring Forsyth, Davidson, Iredell, Guilford, Rowan, Mecklenburg, etc. just know that you will likely have spotty performance depending on your location relative to the simulcast sites with that scanner. For now, counties like Surry, Stokes, Yadkin, etc use stand-alone sites that do not suffer from simulcast distortion.

According to this: https://wNorth Carolina VIPER Counties Verified

Your county is this 'Sheriff and EMS on VIPER. Fire on both VIPER and VHF'

Would this one work?

With the present situation, you are better off with the 325p2. While it can't do Simulcast. It does not struggle on analog, but.

When(and if) they switch Simulcast. You will need an SDS scanner. Yet they struggle on anything below 800mhz.
