I remember reading in this forum somewhere that a person was using a translation program or app to translate non-English shortwave station broadcasts into English. I didn’t understand if this was a real-time translation or using a recorded audio file and translating it. Is there anything, standalone or other wise that can translate an audio signal in real-time? Similar to the Shazam app that can identify a song in real-time?

Hi BS that was me, use Microsoft translate app for Android it's free and ad free. Yep it's in real time. It will do any major foreign
language from speech to English text. Just place your phone 6 inches away from the radios speaker and press the mic button on the screen it should turn green. English text should start scrolling right away in real time.

Turn your device (tablet or phone) volume off because the app will do English speech right after the text, you want text only, this will cause a slight delay If you don't. If your station fades out the app will stop so just hit the screens mic button again no big deal.

This app is a game changer for DX shortwave broadcasts as
there Is very little English services left but tons of foreign language stations still transmitting. Also I got a little stand off Amazon for my tablet so I don't have to hold my tablet by the radios speaker all time.

iPhones come with a translator but you will need to know which language to pick. I used it in Cozumel recently to talk to the cleaning ladies who don’t speak English. Pretty slick. Tac4, will that program automatically translate without choosing a language?

You got to choose the language from a drop down list. No auto.
The good news is Shortwave Info schedule web site lists the language the stations program is in. Interesting also is the Microsoft app will do most dielecs. So for example the BBC will be broadcasting in Dari, you then just use Arabic even know Dari is not a listed language in the apps drop down list. With a little trial and error the app can translate just about anything around the world. 🌎
