Ok this has been driving me nuts... can anyone explain it?

When an operation is going on (house search, etc), (Vernon) Dispatch tells all units to switch to channel 2, or "non-emergency traffic to channel 2", or something to that effect.

WHY don't they just have the 2 or 3 officers involved in the operation switch to channel 2?!?!

It's an officer saftey issue. Other units can either switch to ch2 or wait until the air is clear. The last thing those 2 or 3 units want to do is switch radio channels, what happens if they turn the knob one too many and hit channel 3 or 4? They lose communication with each other and dispatch.

Dispatch probably wants that freq. to be taped and have primary use.

Pretty much a SOP in most places...

Nothing out of the usual.

Aside from having a large system with TAC channels, this is all normal.
