Does anyone monitor Tacoma ? Its been driving me crazy that I cant figure out what tac 3 is. I hear them say "going to tac 3" and I am listening to the trunked system, the vhf freqs. and even scan through the preprogramed police search and cant find it.

Tacoma Tac 3

Well today I discovered what tac 3 is . I was listening today to two officers begining to discuss a rape on their tac channel when officer (1) asked officer (2) if he had a landline he could call him on because he did not want to discuss this over the radio. Officer (2) saib go to tac 3 that is our secured channel.

Well that answers my question about what is tac 3. I understand police need to have secured channels where they cant be heard. My next question is :Should I be able to hear the secured channel at all.I dont see a talk group ID come up while I am trunking their control channel and I dont hear any strange sounds on their 800 freqs.

Yes I (we) understand that encrypted talk groups can only be heard by its users. Thank You.

My question is : Is there any way to tell when they are actually using the encrypted talk group ?

Try running Trunker, System Watch, or one of the other display programs

I am not "setup" to decode stuff(data slicer etc.) and lack some knowledge of it but am curious about it and may someday educate myself on that part of the hobby.

For now I found a way to hear Tacoma using their secure channels. I just scan their freqs. in conv. mode and listen for the data sounds(not cc channel sound)I was just curious anyway, never wanted to try and listen to their secured channels .
They need those encrypted channels(bad guys own scanners too & privacy issues)I just assumed that encryped comms. on a trunked system would show up with a TG ID but just be unintelligble to listen to.

Thanks for the help

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that the uniden family of trunk trackers intentionally do not "lock" on encrypted talkgroups; but if you specifically program in that talkgroup, you should hear the sounds. I believe you need to turn of the "status bit" feature in order to use this "trick".
