Talk Group IDs

I just bought a new BCD996P2 and used Free Scan with Radio Reference to quickly plug in some local things from here in Orange County, California. Much of what I am hearing shows the Talk Group name, but in some cases only the Talk Group number shows up. I can find the names of most Talk Groups except for very new ones, but I don't know how to use Free Scan to change the TG number to the names I've looked up.

Anyone out there who can help me?

Your system might be scanning as search ID instead of scan ID. Scan ID will only display the TG’s you have programmed. Search ID will look for any IDs that are talking on the system.

I’m scanning using Scan. Most talk groups show up with a name, some with just their number. I can look up the number and find the name. Then, I want to use Free Scan to change the number to a name but I don’t know how to do that in Free Scan.

It's rather easy - hit SCAN when you are in the system you are in SEARCH mode...you can also change the mode from ID Search to ID Scan by changing this on the SYSTEM screen. It's in the ID Mode box, just below the very center of the form. See this pic from the user guide...just edit it and when you want to upload use the REPLACE selection on the upload form
