You can also do it on Echolink. I use it occasionally and it's a lot of fun. You never know who you might run into...Mike

Don't you either need a node at your house or a participating repeater in range? AFAIK Echolink isn't just a software solution?

Well yes, that's true, but the OT didn't specify anything specific - just said 'on his comp'(uter).

There are tons of links that use these methods, and even a few that use both.

Yes, but then most of the path is not on ham radio. It's on the internet. Why not just get on Skype? If you want to do it on ham radio, you have a tech license. Get on 10 meters while the sun is still active and have at it.

Why does everyone want everything the easy way? It's not nearly as rewarding.

Find an HF rig in your budget on Craigslist in your area, (I did, Icom 735 and power supply for $300) get some wire and put it as high as possible. I worked the world from one of my previous apartments with a fan dipole in the attic for 10-20 meters and had a blast. Now that I have an apartment with trees around I am very happy with an Off Center Fed Dipole at 45 feet. I work the world on many modes and just 100 watts.

By the way this is the Maryland Forum and I'm sure a moderator may want to move this to the Amateur Radio Forum.
