Another nice day in Arizona so I decided to dig out my Tecsun S-8800 and enjoy the weather in my backyard. Hooked up to my Wellbrook loop.

It does well and sounds good.

Mine has 2 rather annoying glitches:
1) When I am tuning around SW Bands with the Main Tuning Knob - and when I first start to rotate the knob - sometimes it tunes backwards 5 Khz first then starts tuning in the direction I tune

2) My Remote is - well lets say iffy: I have to watch very closely as I enter frequencies as it misses many key hits

My remote works perfectly, the tuning knob is kind of doing what yours is doing. This is my 2nd one as the first one I bought had a bad knob. I had it for a couple of weeks and the tuning knob started getting stiff and eventually you couldn't even turn it. All in all it's been a decent radio but I wouldn't really tell people to run out and buy one.

I had the same trouble with an entirely different radio, a Sangean ATS-909X. Spraying some contact cleaner down the tuner shaft solved the problem. Apparently the contacts were either dirty or oxidized. I wonder if your radio has the same kind of tuner, which is a decoder with brush contacts, like a potentiometer.

I have an old commradio cr1 receiver that has potentiometer problems as did a lot of them. I haven't used it in years but I think I'll try to locate it & try to spray contact cleaner like you suggested for the 8800. Is there a specific brand of cleaner you would suggest?

I just tried to order a PL-600 and it said 17.00 Shipping - that's not bad (At today's Shipping costs)

That's odd. The only shipping option they give me is FedEx and it's $70 to get it in 7 days or less. Plus I am paying in Canadian funds (add 30%) so the total with shipping was $156. I don't really need it in 7 days. I guess I can order one from eBay. I like the specs on the PL-330 but it uses that USB rechargeable battery that I hate. It also has DSP which is something I am also not a fan of. The PL-600 has no DSP and uses just regular AA batteries and you can use it to charge rechargeable AA batteries as well.

Caig Laboratories series of R cleaners, such as R-5. They work well.

S-8800 is a nice radio, I have one and it has the same tuning problems. I think it is some kind of bug with them as everyone i know who has one has the same complaint. Highwayman1224 Let us know if the cleaner works.

I've been using one branded "NeXtech" that contains isopropanol, isobutane and propane (nice and flammable). It seems to have been sold originally by Radio Shack, but I bought it locally from a store named "The Source", which used to be Radio Shack, but was bought out by Bell here in Canada. I can tell you one thing: The Source is certainly not a source for radio equipment or parts.

At any rate, the spray works just fine, and hasn't damaged any of my equipment.

I wonder if the Source still sells that cleaner? I need some.
