Brisbane City Council (BCC) has inked an $8 million deal over five years with Motorola to provide employees with secure communication, GPS location services and data transmission.
The council will use Motorola's Zeon Digital two-way radio communications network which will be provided as a fully managed service.
The contract covers the management of the digital network and related infrastructure services, and the supply of over 1500 digital in-vehicle mobiles and portable radios across Brisbane Transport, Brisbane City Works, Brisbane Water, Local Asset Services, SES and Council's Disaster Management Coordination Unit.
Moreover, the network will provide integrated voice and data communications to buses, City Cat catamarans, service vehicles and personnel in the greater Brisbane area. The contract also includes transition management as the city moves from its legacy analogue two-way radio communication system, support, training and maintenance required to maintain council's communications 24 hours a day, seven says a week. The BCC contract announcement supports the rollout this year of the Zeon Digital network in Brisbane, which will have a geographical footprint of around 10,000 square kilometres, covering the greater Brisbane metropolitan area, Ipswich, Logan, Caboolture and the Gold Coast. Zeon Digital general manager, Steven Crutchfield, said Motorola has invested heavily in building one of the world's best trunked digital radio networks.
He said the network is a good fit for the Brisbane City Council as it provides fast communications over a vast area integrated into one solution. Motorola launched the $50 million Zeon Digital radio communications network late last year in greater Melbourne and Sydney.
Coverage areas include the Melbourne metropolitan area, Geelong and the Mornington Peninsula, as well as the Sydney metropolitan area, Newcastle, Penrith and Wollongong. The Zeon Digital Network is specifically aimed at local government and councils, and commercial operations such as transportation, couriers, security and waste management.
The two-way radio communications network provides secure two-way communications, one-to-one or one-to-many voice calls, Short Data Service messaging, mobile data applications, telephone interconnect, as well as seamless roaming.
The digital nature of the network and separate talkgroups for each customer also ensure complete privacy. Motorola's Zeon Digital radios also feature Global Positioning System (GPS) functionality as well as a single-push duress 'panic button'.
Other customers using Zeon Digital include Cathay Pacific, Elite Executive Cars, Professional Couriers, Bezcorp Security and Harry the Hirer.

Motorola today launched its $50 million Zeon Digital Network in the regional city of Newcastle, north of Sydney.
It is the third in a series of rollouts with radio communication networks already launched in Melbourne and Sydney.
Zeon Digital is a two-way radio communications network with telephone capabilities, text messaging and GPS location services.
The network provides secure, clear and fast two-way communications, one-to-one or one-to-many voice calls, Short Data Service messaging, mobile data applications as well as seamless roaming.
In addition, separate talkgroups for each customer ensure complete privacy. The Network provides fully scalable solutions for companies ranging from three users up to thousands. Zeon Digital handsets feature GPS functionality as well as a single-push emergency 'panic button'.
This allows an organisation to track and manage its workforce and to respond quickly to dangerous or critical situations.
Zeon Digital handsets are available as handheld portable units with full-colour screen, or as in-vehicle units. Zeon general manager, Steven Crutchfield, said Newcastle was recognised as a significant growth area.
"In recent years, the region's economy has been boosted by growth in education and health services, tourism, retail and hospitality," he said.
"The network is a good fit for these markets as it provides reliable, secure, clear and fast communications." Crutchfield said the network is also aimed at local government and councils, transportation companies, couriers, and security and waste management companies. "Motorola has invested heavily in building one of the world's best digital radio networks and we are delighted to be delivering a world leading technology to the Newcastle business community," he said.
"Newcastle is the second largest city in New South Wales and therefore an important market for Motorola. We consider our investment here as a long-term proposition." Zeon Digital customers include Professional Couriers and Bezcorp Security. Motorola is a provider of wireless and broadband communications with sales of US $42.9 billion in 2006.
