Brisbane City Council inks $8 million comms network deal
Motorola wins five year deal with Zeon Digital

Brisbane City Council (BCC) has inked an $8 million deal over five years with Motorola to provide employees with secure communication, GPS location services and data transmission.
The council will use Motorola's Zeon Digital two-way radio communications network which will be provided as a fully managed service.
The contract covers the management of the digital network and related infrastructure services, and the supply of over 1500 digital in-vehicle mobiles and portable radios across Brisbane Transport, Brisbane City Works, Brisbane Water, Local Asset Services, SES and Council's Disaster Management Coordination Unit.
Moreover, the network will provide integrated voice and data communications to buses, City Cat catamarans, service vehicles and personnel in the greater Brisbane area. The contract also includes transition management as the city moves from its legacy analogue two-way radio communication system, support, training and maintenance required to maintain council's communications 24 hours a day, seven says a week. The BCC contract announcement supports the rollout this year of the Zeon Digital network in Brisbane, which will have a geographical footprint of around 10,000 square kilometres, covering the greater Brisbane metropolitan area, Ipswich, Logan, Caboolture and the Gold Coast. Zeon Digital general manager, Steven Crutchfield, said Motorola has invested heavily in building one of the world's best trunked digital radio networks.
He said the network is a good fit for the Brisbane City Council as it provides fast communications over a vast area integrated into one solution. Motorola launched the $50 million Zeon Digital radio communications network late last year in greater Melbourne and Sydney.
Coverage areas include the Melbourne metropolitan area, Geelong and the Mornington Peninsula, as well as the Sydney metropolitan area, Newcastle, Penrith and Wollongong. The Zeon Digital Network is specifically aimed at local government and councils, and commercial operations such as transportation, couriers, security and waste management.
The two-way radio communications network provides secure two-way communications, one-to-one or one-to-many voice calls, Short Data Service messaging, mobile data applications, telephone interconnect, as well as seamless roaming.
The digital nature of the network and separate talkgroups for each customer also ensure complete privacy. Motorola's Zeon Digital radios also feature Global Positioning System (GPS) functionality as well as a single-push duress 'panic button'.
Other customers using Zeon Digital include Cathay Pacific, Elite Executive Cars, Professional Couriers, Bezcorp Security and Harry the Hirer.

Motorola launches $50 million digital network in Newcastle
The third in a series of rollouts

Motorola today launched its $50 million Zeon Digital Network in the regional city of Newcastle, north of Sydney.
It is the third in a series of rollouts with radio communication networks already launched in Melbourne and Sydney.
Zeon Digital is a two-way radio communications network with telephone capabilities, text messaging and GPS location services.
The network provides secure, clear and fast two-way communications, one-to-one or one-to-many voice calls, Short Data Service messaging, mobile data applications as well as seamless roaming.
In addition, separate talkgroups for each customer ensure complete privacy. The Network provides fully scalable solutions for companies ranging from three users up to thousands. Zeon Digital handsets feature GPS functionality as well as a single-push emergency 'panic button'.
This allows an organisation to track and manage its workforce and to respond quickly to dangerous or critical situations.
Zeon Digital handsets are available as handheld portable units with full-colour screen, or as in-vehicle units. Zeon general manager, Steven Crutchfield, said Newcastle was recognised as a significant growth area.
"In recent years, the region's economy has been boosted by growth in education and health services, tourism, retail and hospitality," he said.
"The network is a good fit for these markets as it provides reliable, secure, clear and fast communications." Crutchfield said the network is also aimed at local government and councils, transportation companies, couriers, and security and waste management companies. "Motorola has invested heavily in building one of the world's best digital radio networks and we are delighted to be delivering a world leading technology to the Newcastle business community," he said.
"Newcastle is the second largest city in New South Wales and therefore an important market for Motorola. We consider our investment here as a long-term proposition." Zeon Digital customers include Professional Couriers and Bezcorp Security. Motorola is a provider of wireless and broadband communications with sales of US $42.9 billion in 2006.

Should be interesting to see how many new Sites they have to put in. Motorolas existing 800 Mhz network only has about half a dozen sites stretching from Coolum in the North, to Surfers Paradise in the South, and the western-most site in on Mt Coot-tha.

The BCC transport fleet currently makes heavy usage of the Telstra Fleetcoms UHF MPT1327 network, which has a lot more sites in the proposed coverage area.

Of concern, is that the SES in the proposed coverage area, will be the only Units using Tetra, while the rest of the State remains on analogue radio equipment, which the State Government have been progressively updating over the past couple of years.

It is only a matter of time once TETRA is up and running that it will get a workout from the Council and state emergency services.

The Brisbane area (along with far NE NSW and the SE corner of Queensland) is notorious for mega hailstorms (in fact as I type they are homing in on Brisbane - see Weather Bureau's public Brisbane Doppler radar .... anytime you see dark brown it is invariabily the hail echo).

Further to the above posts I would like to update the database for Queensland trunking but I require the help of the locals. With the introduction of TETRA soon, I would be interested to get feedback as to what is still Motorola and what TETRA is up and running. In Sydney 5 frequencies maybe licensed to a site but when you listen only 3 are active - TETRA has an annoying WFM hum - presumably the silent frequencies serve the purpose of being available when required and preclude anybody else from getting spectrum access (in australia there is only 5Mhz bandwidth for 800Mhz trunking at this time). Frequencies listed below are sourced from the ACMA database this week.

Probably not, as the ACMA database shows both Sites as only 5W, and 'Sub-local'.

14km by the weather radar.
From memory driving out from Surfers Paradise to the Gold Coast Motorway via Hope Island, that is all flat terrain.
Yeah you might be right .... two separate systems.

FWIW: During the recent week long "Schoolies" event on the Gold Coast, there were a number of reports of event management being heard on 86x.0375 on both the Mt Coot-tha and Peninsula Blg sites. Both sites were broadcasting a System ID of 000A. I checked out the Balmoral Ridge site, as it also has the same frequencies, but nothing was heard. In fact no activity of any sort was heard from the 800 MHz frequencies at Balmoral Ridge. While in the area, did hear WFM hum on 865.7375 and 866.7375 at Ocean View.

Motorola Smartnet P/L - 1 Eagle Street Brisbane
865.1125, 866.1125, 867.1125, 868.1125, 869.1125
The above frequency in red, and its associated licence, is also at Pinkenba.

Motorola Smartnet P/L - Balmoral Ridge, Coolum
865.0375, 865.1125, 865.3625, 865.6125, 865.8625
866.0375, 866.1125, 866.3625, 866.6125, 866.8625
867.0375, 867.1125, 867.3625, 867.6125, 867.8625
868.0375, 868.1125, 868.3625, 868.6125, 868.8625
869.0375, 869.1125, 869.3625, 869.6125, 869.8625
Balmoral Ridge is just south of Montville, which is roughly due east of Caloundra, if you know the area - a long way from Coolum. I believe the TV transmitters for the Coolum area are actually north of Coolum. Very misleading by whoever named the Site.

Motorola Smartnet P/L - Brisbane Airport
865.0625, 865.5625
866.0625, 866.5625
867.0625, 867.5625
868.0625, 868.5625
869.0625, 869.5625
The above frequencies have moved to Pinkenba, as well as two additional frequencies, 869.1125 and 869.2375 (See 1 Eagle St, and Mt Gravatt entries)

Motorola Smartnet P/L - Darlington Range
865.6625, 866.6625, 867.6625, 868.6625, 869.6625
The above frequency in blue, and its associated licence, is also at Helensvale.
The above frequency in red, and its associated licence, is also at Mt Cotton.

Motorola Smartnet P/L - Manly West
865.4875, 866.4875, 867.4875, 868.4875, 869.4875
The above frequency in red, and its associated licence, is also at Mt Cotton.

I say with field testing they are moving sites and frequencies around to get the best coverage. This happened in Sydney as well. There is quite a few changes since I looked a couple of months ago.

PS "Schoolies" - is the period on the Gold Coast during late October/early November when thousands upon thousands of Year 12 school-leavers from Queensland and NSW descend upon Surfers Paradise to celebrate the end of school.

Don't forget that a lot of movements will be for financial reasons....if there's a stack of freqs not being used, but they dont want anyone else to be able to register them, they'll store those freqs at a site where the ACMA doesn't charge such a big licence fee (and maybe the tower owner too....)...then when it comes time to use them, they'll move them to the original intended site.....
