Mediaextreme is the name used by Gigle Networks for the chip set it makes that is used by Belkin and by Aztech for these powerline modems. Aztech calls its products a Homeplug Powerline Adapter. I didn't know the Mediaextreme version of the Aztech product is being sold in the US. Does your device have US-type electrical plugs or European?.

Uh Oh, you might not like this either

Atheros chip will send data over electrical lines | BPL smart grid data - Urgent Communications article

This is very bad news. The original BPL concept was unworkable and counter-productive. Now someone else has a few million to get another try at making this stupid idea happen. It didn't work in Europe, but they chose to try it here anyway. They did, and not only was BPL was a flop, but it was shown that the tests conducted by the FCC deliberately misrepresented the interference potential as "minor." Now the notion has been reincarnated once again under the guise of Smart Grid.

Your tax dollars at work...

I saw nothing in the link that indicates the Atheros product operates at the higher frequencies. Atheros is nothing new. It's the same below-30 MHz product.

It uses standard northamerican plugs. The unit was purchased at an electronics/computer trade show.
