This is what they shut down GRE's factory for?

Need some info please. I ordered a PSR 800 to replace my old PRO 94 through Amazon and was informed it would take 4 to 6 weeks to receive. Now my question is do they still have the 800 to sell or did they quite making them and I should cancel my order and find another scanner that will receive the P25 system?

Better cancel and get a 396XT. You are going to be waiting a LONG time for a new GRE scanner! They have been discontinued and GRE has no plans to start making them again.

Is GRE going to come out with a PSR-810 after they sell all their current inventory for twice its worth?

The PSR 800 is history. There are a few left for sale out there, often at insane prices. They pop up on ebay for around $700 once a week or so, and the auction often ends early. For anyone thinking that they will get one after 6-8 weeks, I would say your chances are very very slim.

I will be taking good care of mine.

Yeah, seems the odds of GRE returning to manufacturing scanners aren't very good at the moment.

I'm afraid that you are right. But I'm hoping you are wrong. My area recently converted to 800 meg trunking, which made my existing scanners decent paperweights. So I bought one PSR-410 to try it. I liked it and bought another for my car. Then a few days ago, went to buy one for my pickup, and discovered they aren't available, "right now."

I've heard from others that were at IWCE, that GRE plans on supporting the product out of it's California office. If the product doesn't return soon, I don't see that support lasting long. NO plans to start production back up at this time. Kind of hard for a company to survive if they don't have anything to sell.

Alinco is not affected by this.

I agree with this. How can they offer support if they aren't making money? I hope something changes because I really like GRE radios.

Same here, I have Starrsoft software for all the models since the PRO-92. I understand how GRE radios work and going to a whole new system would be difficult. The last two Unidens I purchased were disappointments. All I used up till 2000 were Unidens, including three BC-760's, one in each car and one as a base station. When the GRE manufactured scanners that are computer programmable came out in 2000 I've only bought one Uniden and since it was such a disappointment, it now sits in a closet.

I'm in the same category. Only rather than Uniden, all mine were Radio Shack, (which I guess used to be manufactured by GRE.) I've had scanners just about everywhere I spend much time. In my garage workshop, in my office, next to my recliner in the living room, and in all vehicles. (SUV, mini-van, pickup, & UTV. I'm retired law, and ex fire and medic. You would think I'd had enough of listening to this stuff, and I did for several years. But then I got back into it again. Now, I'm stuck with two working GRE scanners, and suffering "withdrawals.";)
I'm going to just sit it out for a minute here, and see what happens with GRE.

I think Radio Shack had a lot to do with it. They were GRE's big customer at least in the USA. For the last several years all the push from them was cell phones. GRE tried to go it alone with the GRECOM brand, but they could never get in as many sales outlets or have the advertising potential that Radio Shack has.

I'd hate to think this was it for Grecom . My GRE500 shares a co equal status with my Uniden gear. The press release hinted at negotiations with another manufacturer so hopefully they'll be out and running again soon.

I wouldn't doubt it. Now THERE is a company, that, (as far as I'm concerned anyway,) has far outlived their usefulness. I'm sure glad I don't own a RS franchise. . .

CIA/Homeland Security?

In the presence of many conspiracy theorists, I am quite surprised someone hasn't mentioned the likelihood that the CIA/Homeland Security is involved with the GRE closure/possible demise. Typically, CIA operations are not known until after the fact, if at all.

If the government moves to Phase II P25, the only radio capable of receiving some of this traffic is the PSR 800. At present, we don't know whether Uniden will come up with a model capable of receiving Phase II.

Just a note. I talked with the folks over at Scanner Master today and was told that they at least thought Grecom was done. At least the sales rep I talked to had those thoughts. I sincerely hope he is wrong. I like my PSR500 as much as my Uniden stuff, program each with no problem, and enjoy them to the max. Besides, who is Uniden next closest competition? Competition is good, means better stuff for us consumers.

Although I cannot agree that deregulation has helped the airline industry, we can see how competition has been minimized with monolithic corporations such as the banking industry. "Too big to fail" does not seem to help the average consumer. Oops,I nearly forgot, "corporations are individuals."

I would hate to think the digital scanning industry was in the hands of one company. To me, this would be a nightmare.

I wonder how large/small of consumer base the scanning industry has become in the digital age. I don't have a clue.

I don't like waiting on things I know are uncertain. I suppose I will have to accept the outcome, but I won't like it if Uniden is the only one left. I wonder why AOR has stayed out of the digital scanning industry?

In closing, I once heard many skeptics state, "there will never be a digital scanner."

While Uniden is the big player, don't forget their are many other receiver manufacturers. Icom makes some nice stuff, and even radios that will do P25, however not trunking. AOR, as Ensnared said, is out there also.
If anything, it would make sense that Icom could step in and grab a slice of the market. They already sell P25 and NXDN 2 way radios, and they make, or at least made, some nice hand held radios. Having their foot in the door of the amateur market (to put it lightly), seems to put Icom in a good position, if they chose to go this route.
AOR certainly makes nice stuff, they just seem to price themselves out of the average consumer market, but then again, their stuff is usually worth it.

I bet Uniden will get a challenger down the road. Who knows, might even be one of those companies that make/sell the $59 dual band radios that everyone seems to love.
