Whenever I visit RR, all but the most recent threads have been marked read. On other vBulletin forums I belong to, they remain marked unread until I read them, or mark them as read.
Subsequently, I potentially miss some thread posts since the last visit because they have been marked read without me even having seen them.
Is this by design, or am I missing a setting?

Thanks.

At the risk of sounding stupid, are you sure you are logged in when this happened? Otherwise try clearing your cookies and CACHE.

It happens to me as well at times. If Im logged out and visit the forums, once I log in, all the threads show up as read. There also seems to be a timing issue involved, if Im on the boards for longer than I believe an hour, any unread threads show up as read.

Weird, Im sure its a setting somewhere, but havent looked hard enough to figure it out.

Yes to being logged in. I deleted cookies, and regularly clear the cache. I am using Firefox 3 btw.

If I hit "new posts" I get them back till the "time last visited" under my user sign in.

I have logged out and cleared cookies, but after a certain amount of time, even if RR has remained open in an open tab but sitting idle, I click on a thread and I'm now showing last visited 1 hour from the current time and only threads in that one hour period are now marked unread.

Something is timing out, and if it is on my end I can't seem to figure it out.

Anybody have any ideas? As I said before, all my other vBulletin boards behave normally.

I'm guessing its your browser. It is prefetching the content for you to speed up web browsing, hence why everything appears to be read.

Maybe I am misreading the OP but it seems that you are saying you visit, read a few threads, leave the site and return some time later and the threads are all marked as read except for new ones (since your last visit). If this is what you are experiencing, that is the way this has worked on the site forever. I am not sure if it is an option or by design, but this is the way the site has functioned since before RR existed, both with vBulletin and whatever else we were using.

Perhaps I misunderstood as well. If that is the case as Lou understands it, then it is different than the one I experience. I actually stay on the site for an extended amount of time. For example, if I read some posts in one of the scanning area, walk away for 30 mins or so and click in the for sale area, all the threads appear to have been read.

Walking away from the computer is like leaving, no activity detected at the server; I too have done exactly that with the same result. However, I also have been active on the site for hours on end (such is the requirements sometimes of moderators) without that happening. I think (not sure about this) if you go to the DB area and don't keep a window open on the forums, the same thing will happen (no forum activity, threads marked as read.)

Thanks to all that responded, I guess it is working as it is designed to operate.

The reason I brought it up, on some boards the post remain unread until action taken by the user. Never an unread post since the the last one read (or the sub-topic cleared as read). So I thought something was amiss here.

It's an option in vB. It can be switched between the current setup of marking everything as read automatically, or only marking as read if you actually read it.
