• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8330/4.5.0.138 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

I'm trying to figure out how to add/delete a whole group from my TK-290. I see on the programming software there is a "scan" and "group scan" buttons. I haven't figured out the group scan yet, so I'm turning to here to see if its possible.I have 5 different groups(Ham, Public Safety, railroad, WX, ect...) and depending what I want to monitoring I'd like to add/delete the whole group while scanning. Its kind of a pain deleting every channel. Thanks for any help!

The 290 does have the ability to do single group or multi group scan which is selected in software.
It's been some time since I've had one in my hands to know if the user can add/delete groups.
On my 790 and my 2180, pressing and holding add/delete button for two seconds will toggle that group for scan as shown by the left arrow. Not sure what the 290 would display if it did that.

I also have a 790 and was able to figure it out on that. I saw the single or multi scan in the software for the 290 but still can't figure out how to work it properly.

I did some more playing around after my last post. I removed the self programming (R466) diode. When I power the radio on, you hold side buttons 1 and 2 and it will put the radio into a field programming mode. From there, you can add/delete whole groups. Not the most handy thing, but it works. You can also adjust/change freq TX and RX, tones(PL ect..), lower levels, squelch, and many more things. Now the radio is more like a ham radio, still don't have a true VFO. You can program a frequency( ie. 146.520) into any leftover channels and edit them later via the field programming mode if you should ever need a frequency not already programmed in.
