TK-3402 programming basics

Hello, I'm having some noob questions on getting started with this radio. This is a TK-3402U16P. I'm trying to reach the quiet tone menu. I've found instructions for previous versions on this radio (TK-3300, etc.) that say I need to hold the PTT and Side-1 buttons while powering the radio on until I hear "Self" and "Channel" at which point I can navigate through menus to set channel freq, quiet tones, etc.. I've gone through this procedure several times, but I only get a beep when I turn the radio on. I can reach the Vox sensitivity menu while holding down the Side-2 button however. I'm not sure what is going on ... I can't seem to find specific instructions on how to do this on the TK-3402 - maybe this radio can only be programmed via SW?

The TK-3402u requires the KPG-159dn programming software and one of the following:
KPG-22A RS-232 programming cable
-or-
KPG-22U USB programming cable

Software can be purchased from the Kenwood dealer you purchased your radio from, same with the programming cable, although there are some good aftermarket ones.

Be wary about purchasing programming software from "other" sources. The firmware in the radio will only be compatible with certain revisions of programming software. If you have new firmware in the radio and try to use and old version of software, it may not work correctly.

Latest programming software is KPG-159DN version 1.03, which was released in September of 2014.
Latest firmware for that radio is version 2.05, released in September of 2014.

Thanks for the reply. I have ordered the software, but looks like it takes 2 weeks to arrive.

I'm curious though, why do the instruction here: http://wscommunications.com/RadioManuals/TK-2402V16P_TK-3402U16P-Manual Insert.pdf not work? Similar to the previous radios I'm understanding you hold the PTT and Side-1 key while turning on the radio and that should enter into a programming menu.
