• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

In my area we have a number of repeaters in a system. Each repeater transmits with the same frequency and PL tone.
However, the repeaters are each activated by different PL tones. The idea is you select the best (closest maybe) and use it's PL for your transmit.

Does anyone know how the user select-able function works?

For instance: can I program a receive PL in my channel entry and select a user select-able PL entry that only has transmit PL programmed.
Would it leave the receive PL alone or wipe it out?

When you set up the OST lists, you can program in the PL tones you want to use into slots. The function impacts both TX and RX, but you can program all the entries to keep a certain RX tone if you want, or set it to "none" and it'll run CSQ.

Or, just program in all the different channel entries. I have a site where we have different repeaters using different TX tones depending one which site you access. I just programmed them in as separate channels. Users select the repeater they want rather than messing with OST.

Channel method is how my local public safety runs it, uses the same method for the NXDN channels as well since OST (not including AAR firmware) can't select RAN. Very foolproof compared to a menu

Channel method i also agree is the best and most user friendly way of doing this and we have a lot of people doing this in my area too. the only time i have used or seen people use ost is on GMRS or ham but mostly on GMRS as it is the same 7 repeater ch. but what i do is when i use OST i normally go to "Edit, Conventional" and press Standard QT. that auto fills in all PL tones but not DPL tones (as GMRS normally uses PL) then i go to key assign and hit the check box for list selection then set a key for OST. with that when programed into a radio all a user need to do is press and hold to select the tone and taping the key turn OST on and off.
