To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I just received a TK-830G and cannot program this radio. I have the KPG-7D Ver 2.01 and the KPG-4 cable. I have previously programmed TK-830 radios with this PC, software, and cable without any problems.

I have an old computer with true dos and a serial port and I know the cable is good because it works fine on TK-762 radios.

I put the radio in PG mode on power up and begin to read the radio the display will start at 15 and cycle down to 1 and the pc screen shows 50% of the blocks read then it just errors out.

Does the 830G version require a newer software? Any ideas?

That happens when the model type written to the radio doesn't match the hardware setup you have.

If you don't care to find out what is already in the radio, you can start a new program template with the correct model type in software and write it to the radio (ignoring "model mismatch" warning). You should now be able to read/write at will.

I'm thinking it may be slightly more than that based on feedback from the Kenwook 830 Yahoo Group feedback.

I actually have a radio from one source and a control head from another source, the radio is a 830G that I later found out was setup for dual band and has a FAC eeprom chip. The control head came from another source which was from a straight TK830.

At the moment I think I may need some of the 8 pin chips that will match the control head to the radio for number of channels and I may also need a replacement eeprom that is not for a dual band system.

This problem pops up when you start swapping parts and pieces around as it sounds like what you have done.

When you start a read, the radio display indicates 16K of data (counts 15 to 0). This is common for a single band, 160 channel, full feature control head. The computer read blocks only get to 50% so that indicates it's expecting 32K of data which it's not getting and errors out. The computer looks at the model type at the beginning of the read to determine the 32K size. Now the only setups that have 32K of data are dual band. If you want to read as is, you'll have to set the radio hardware back to what the computer expects it is.

That or as in my above, start fresh and reset the model type in the software.

Oh, the FAC chip should be all right to leave in, it will support a single band radio no problem.,

Yup, you are correct. After providing all details of the eeproms and confirmed which resisters have and have not been removed from the radio and control head and all dual band mods returned to normal I was able to get the radio to work.

A poster on Yahoo groups provided additional details regarding the channel upgrades and dual band upgrades I was able to push a basic head 99 channel codeplug into the radio and it will now read and write normally.

The radio also works properly when programmed.

Thanks for the feedback it is much appreciated.
