I live in Memphis. I have their frequencies and sites from the few cities in west TN I may travel to loaded into my Whistler TRX-1 Scanner. Some days I hear them and other days nothing. Do they change their frequencies or talkgroups daily? I saw their helicopter flying over Memphis today, which I have never seen before, tried to listen to their car frequencies and did not hear anything. I think this has occurred since they went to the TN Adv Comm Network trunk system. So it has happened for some time to me. Just don't know why. Any idea?

I listen to the highway patrol frequently. On TACN, they are on:

47014 b7a6 TTHP-D4-Disp1District 4: Dispatch 1

Here in Atoka, the best site for me is the Arlington Site.

Our system is a multicast based system. It really depends if there is a radio affiliated to the THP talk group on the Summer Ave tower. If there are no radios affiliated to the Dispatch talk group on Summer Ave, you will not hear anything. As long as you're getting a signal from the control channel of the site, you should hear something from the site if radios are affiliated. You might try programming our Arlington site in as well. That will give you two sites to catch traffic.
On the other hand the Memphis / Shelby County system is a simulcast system so if a radio affiliates to one of their talk groups on one site, it broadcasts on all of their sites.

With the Memphis/Shelby, has anyone successfully mapped out those other north standalones. I did get one of them logged and in the DB, but moved before I got them all locked down. Also any more word on the P25 upgrade that is supposed to be happening?

From what I see in the FCC database and the signal results I get living a few hundred yards across the county line in Atoka, I am wondering if the northern sites are also in a simulcast configuration. Even with a yagi pointed at the Millington East tower, I pick up both of the other southern simulcasts with stronger signals on my BCD536hp. I routinely monitor Sheriff and Fire along with Millington PD, and I have not heard any traffic from the Millington tower although I can hear the control channel.

Another note - There seems to no longer be a clear line between Public Safety and Ops - I hear sheriff, fire, and EMS-to-hospital on both simulcasts, and don't hear all the traffic if I limit the scanner to Public Safety simulcast.

If things go to last schedule I heard, by next Christmas Memphis/Shelby will be P25, and MLGW will be DMR T3.

As posted by a person in the know TACN is not SIMULCAST in Shelby County it is MULTICAST there is a big difference ALL SITES USE DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES.
The Shelby County/Memphis system is 2 main simulcasts with what appears to be a mini simulcast third site for extra coverage. The TACN for the area is 2 stand-alone sites.

Back to the Original topic, If no THP Radios are not affiliated to a site then more than likely unless the talk group was programmed to persist on a site it may not be available

All TACN sites are setup to only carry traffic of affiliated talkgroups so if no radio is affiliated no traffic.
Thank you. That seems to be what it is, I guess. But hard to believe Memphis or Arlington would not be active every day.
