Hey all... I posted awhile ago about my BCT8. It gave up the ghost... sort of. The display lights up, but no read out and you only get static. I have tried to reset it repeatedly. Does anybody know what the problem is, or if it is worth fixing? I was just curious. :)

How long is your warranty from Uniden? My PRO-2096 (GRE) is one year. Maybe it's still covered.

Nope, it fried a few months after the year warranty. That was my first thought. I have had it shoved in a drawer for the last few months frustrated with it, and got it out again today to try and think of a way to resuscitate it.

Uniden's general flat rate repair fee is about $50 if you wanted to see about getting it repaired.

How do you think you did it? Reverse polarity on the 12VDC?

Nope, no clue. It was installed in my car... had been for over a year... turned it on one day and it just never booted. Been like that ever since.

Possibly broken solder joint, or cracked trace on the PC board from vibration. Do you drive on a lot of bumpy roads?

WDZ - do you still have squelch action or do you just get 'white noise' from the speaker no matter where the squelch control is set? Also, do you have any control over the volume level? If the squelch is not operating to silence the noise and the volume level is not controllable in addition to the display difficulties, the most likely cause is the power regulator and distribution chip on the secondary board near where the power enters the unit. A colleague of mine had a similar issue due to a static discharge through his fingers into the volume control on the bottom left of the front panel, from sliding across the seat and zapping the chip with a static spark.

I don't really drive down roads that are any more bumpy then normal. The squelch knob is not closing the squelch gate. I am getting white noise through the speaker, and the volume control knob IS controlling the volume.

Sounds as if part of the power regulator and distribution chip got hammered, but not in the same failure mode as what happened to my colleague... Man that's too bad that this took place - that's NOT an inexpensive radio...

Although I haven't really studied the bct8 in detail, Uniden tends to stick with standard circuit configs. for a lot of their radios. Generally, 12 volts supplies the audio amplifier, feeds a 9v regulator circuit, and goes to a remotely mounted NPN transistor that controls the backlighting. The 9 volts is used in various locations througout the radio, and is furthur reduced by separate regulators for the analog and digital portions of the radio (say 3.5 volts or so).

Given this distribution scheme, we can possibly narrow down the source of the problem.

The fact that you have hiss audio, and backlight, tells me that the 9v regulator is probably fine, and the analog supply is probably fine.

The fact that the display doesnt work, and you have no squelch control tells me that the CPU isnt running/executing properly. The cpu is what usually controls the audio muting for the squelch, so if the cpu isnt running as it should, the squelch action wont work. This could be caused by a number of things. The primary suspects being the digital supply regulator (probably a Toko 11238 or similar), and the cpu reset circuit (usually a voltage detector IC, a few diodes and a npn transistor). Other possibilities include a bad/poorly soldered clock crystal, or even a trashed CPU(although I doubt that).

Aside from the transistor that controls the backlighting, most of these components are surface mount, and very small. Also, being near the CPU, they are possibly covered in epoxy. Not somehting I would suggest digging into unless you have experience in SMT rework/repair.

Does the radio react to the keypad at all? Does it make any beeping sounds? Or does it just light up and sit there like a dumb brick?

"Power regulator and distribution chip"? Wazzat? No one ever mentioned functions like that in any electronics course I ever took.
