for a while now have been hearing tornado sirens, in the mornings between 6:45 and 7:20, they do one growl and then die back down. Sounds like it could be coming from Craney Island or somewhere near the Monitor-Merrimac BT. has anybody else heard this.

Chanman, aren't you in Portsmouth? (Your location doesn't show on the mobile forum). If so, I'd think the lab is a bit far away to hear that unless you're on the river and the wind is blowing just right. Tornado siren? Really? Didn't know anyone had such a thing in the area

I wonder if you're really hearing whistles at NN Shipbuilding or as you suggested at maybe at Craney. If you're hearing that daily I would think that rather than a daily tornado siren test.

Yes, I am in Portsmouth, just south of Craney Island, now maybe it could be at NN Shipyard, but i know for sure it is not a whistle, it's a siren

that's possible for the James River Bridge, but not the Monitor-Merrimac, which is the bridge I live near.

Portsmouth doesn't have any volunteer fd's nor do they use fire sirens.

It could be a daily test.
If you know what time they sound every morning, can you get out on the road and head in the direction you hear them from, maybe track them down a little farther each day, until you've located them?

I was thinking maybe Surry power plant?

Surry does tests once a month, which are published. They even send me a calendar every year with the test dates marked on it. Surry tests are usually between 10a and 11a as well. If it occurs daily, its not surry. It could, perhaps, be shift change at the N.N. shipyard, or something similar.

Years ago (late 90's), I delivered office supplies at the shipyard for a few months; worst gig I ever had, dragging many cases of copier paper up ladders. Only a few buildings on the yard proper (maybe 5) has an elevator; two buildings I sent the paper up via dumbwaiters.... What I call a "whistle" is actually what you describe. The timing seems right for the beginning of the day to the best of my recollection.

maybe it is a whistle, but it sounds like it's coming from the west, Suffolk. Or maybe even the Navy FD station on Craney island.
