News : Tornado takes down a Raleigh, North Carolina radio tower | Radio-Info.com
The severe weather that has ripped though a number of southern states appears to be the cause for the broadcast tower of Spanish sports WCLY-AM (1550) & country WQDR-AM (570) in Raleigh. According to WRAL-TV, a tornado which cut a mile-wide path through Raleigh snapped trees, utility poles and wires. Some fallen trees clipped the guy-wires holding the station's tower, causing the stick to come crashing to the ground and knocking both stations off the air. WCLY is owned by Capitol Broadcasting, while Curtis Media owns WQDR. They shared the same tower. WQDR posted on their station website, "Due to storm damage from the tornadoes that ripped through South Raleigh Saturday, WQDR-AM has been knocked off the air. Our engineers are assessing the damage and hope to be back on the air as quickly as possible."
Meanwhile: Curtis Media announces that its entire Raleigh station group is cooperating on a tornado benefit event this Thursday, named "Care on the Air." Five stations will be broadcasting from five separate Wal-Mart locations around the Triangle from noon to 2pm.
The Raleigh-Greensboro Board of Radio-Info.com continues talking about the storm damage and the storm coverage by local radio and TV here.
