I listened to the new P25 digital system for about 3 months before it went encrypted, and yes there were complaints both from officers and dispatch about it. And yes in buildings as well, i've heard it mentioned several times specifically from officers saying "no reception at all in this building".

I wonder how Toronto Fire is gonna handle it. I know they currently use a mobile repeater in the Distric Chief's van for buildings with bad reception and underground work. Will they eventually upgrade those mobile repeaters to digital?

I also wonder how TPS is handling subway calls now. Before they had analog (non trunked) subway channels.

I would take the CTCSS tones off all the old 400 mhz fire ground channels and same with the police and ems subway channels, you might find P25 on them. Toronto fire was doing a lot of testing with mobile repeaters and going through all the fire ground channels recently.

One thing that came up was "waiting for the repeater to warm up", guess those things just don't turn on instantly.

They'd almost have to do it like London and have a repeater in every engine, the district chief can't always be at every call and sometime things happen quickly at a scene.

Can confirm that when TPS 52 Division is talking on the trunk system, there's no activity on the old "5HQ" channel, analog or digital mode.

Re the DC not at every call - God forbid they design the system to work better eh?

that's all fine and dandy, then they should use a phone, here in Canada there is a thing called "Freedom of Information Act" and as long as it's a Public paid service and its not sensitive info people have a right to know! in fact they can apply to get disclosure of what is being said, unless we lost our charter of rights

Ya. And with the FIA you have to apply to get what you want, there is no law in Canada that I know of that lets the general public listen to any telecommunications. If they choose to communicate with encryption they have every legal right to do so.

Yeah, i've heard nothing except what sounds like morse code sometimes... a very quick succession of beeps... I've heard them on several of the old 1-5HQ channels.

I changed those channels to analog & digital. So they've effectively killed the old subway patch frequencies, but they must have new ones... I wonder if they are encrypted... maybe its time to take a ride from kennedy to kipling and do some scanning, lol...
