Total Beginner to Scanning

Hi,

I am a total newbie when it comes to scanning. From looking at some scanning sights, I have found out that my state, California, does allow scanning (except for unlawful purposes).

What do I need to know about scanning before I invest in it? What does a beginner's scanner run price wise, and what features does it lack that more advanced models have?

If I were to get a scanner, would there be anything interesting and worth listening too? Would it all be in codes I can't understand, like "10-23" and such?

I would appreciate any advice or knowledge you can offer me.

Definitely look at buying a TrunkTracker.
There are some nice RadioShack models on sale for $149 that are NOT digital
Check out the www.Radioshack.com site. If your area of California doesn't have digital
systems in place, these will do fine.

Also, besides the actual scanner, consider an outdoor antenna. Radio Shack has an inexpensive one HERE . This made a world of difference to me when I started out, as things came in clearer and I was able to receive alot more...especially if you want to listen to more than your local public safety.
