Was reading another post by some one else & they were asking about getting traffic from another tower
& it got me wondering if the same thing is happening to me on my RS PRO 106. I get KHP & Topeka NWS
loud & clear on my 106, NOW my question is this, am I really getting the traffic from Topeka Ks or am I getting it from the Tower from Wy Co Ks being I am close to Wy Co Ks. I live in NE Lv Co Ks, so am I getting the traffic from Topeka Ks or from Wy Co Ks ?

A radio affiliated with that tower which had that talk group and that's why you have traffic from there. The NWS transmitter is 1000 watts so you'd get traffic there

It actually depends. When a transmission comes in, look at the control frequency and that will tell you which tower it's listening to. Statewide systems like this can be set to simulcast transmissions to multiple towers by default if they overlap an agency's territory. You are probably picking it off the Leavenworth tower, because Wyandotte county is Troop A. Troop B works Shawnee and Leavenworth counties, but if you're in the NE corner of LV, you're probably out of range of the Topeka tower, especially on the portable.

Where the odd "skip-like" behavior comes into play is when you have say a Topeka trooper going to Hays.. As their radio associates with each tower along the way, the system will start funneling all traffic for that TG onto those towers. So for example, under normal circumstances I can't hear the Topeka troop - until a radio with their TG connects to the Russell tower, then I hear everything for a little while.

Answer to my question about the traffic signal I get from the towers for KHP & points west of Lv Co & Topeka NWS, I was watching my scanner to see what CC appears with the dispatch & or trooper traffic
& it showed CC for Lv Co Ks. So I don't really hear it straight from Topeka, so this answer's my question right ?

I would venture to say someone from Topeka area was in your area, therefore the traffic was broadcast on the tower for Leavenworth County.

You would be listening to Multicast Traffic between different towers. For example, I heard a chase on one of Troop G's channels. The chase was two nights ago, and it was outside of Kansas City. I wasn't listening to say the Olathe tower in Butler County. I'm monitoring Butler County's Simulcast. I'm going to hear all of Troop G's traffic here because a radio is affiliated to Butler County's Simulcast on that TG. A better way to identify the site you would be receiving would be to check out the Site ID. Control Channels are reused, however, the system is engineered to not allow overlap on reused CC frequencies.

I was watching my scanner to see what CC it was showing & every time I had traffic I would PSE my scanner to check the CC & every time it would show the CC for LV CO, even if the traffic was from Topeka Ks or on i35 south I even got traffic from Wabaunsee Co Ks, now I am wondering if I was in Topeka would it show Topeka's CC ? I am not using a out side antenna just my 800mhz rubber duck. And like I said be for I live in NE LV CO Ks. Thanks for the reply.

It will show Topeka's CC when you're in the Topeka area, yes.

There was a group of us in the KC Metro area for a meeting and we likely were the radio drag as we scan our local KSICS on our radios no matter where we are.

nec911, I appreciate your info on this but this is a daily routine. But I believe like Redneck0410 said if I was in Topeka my scanner would be using the CC for Topeka, I guess it's like per say ground zero
frequency depending where you are.

A good way to tell what radios are affiliated with the tower is use a program like pro96com. It's helped me a ton.

As I said before if you're scanning from home, it will be locked onto the closest tower, which in you case would be Leavenworth. It doesn't matter where the TG is from, if a radio with a specific TG has registered with the tower, you will hear all traffic meant for that TG, whether it is from your county, the next county, or a county on the Kanorado border - that's the beauty of a statewide P25 system. And again, it's entirely possible that your tower is configured to simulcast that traffic by default given that your area is served by Troop B.
