TPS Going Digital??

Correct me if I am wrong but I heard some where that TPS is switching over to Digital in the very near future. Is this true?

How soon in the very near future ? ... is this from a reliable source? :shock:

The capability exists to go that route, but I wonder where it sits on the
priority list to upgrade ? :?

It would be nice if someone from the Radio & Electronic Services of
TPS could answer though.

Toronto Police Going Digital

I read this off another post in a yahoo group. I am kind of sceptical because i thought they just spent alot of money when they went to the trunking system they are on now ( just a few years ago) and that would mean big money changing over the radios. I'd like to get a 'first' hand report on this.
I'll get that post on here as soon as I can and try and get ahold of the person who posted it to see what his sources are.

The information was that they were going to encyrpted digital as the durham police are apparently going to as well.

Hi,

montreal seem to move to an astro P25 for 2005 2006 because this radio system is obsolete... (35 years). The Montreal fire dept hs just move since 8 months and they are not crypted... For Toronto, the TFD and TPS seem not too much old and seem to work well. Why they would to pay M$ for more ?

May be an update to and p25 . or crypt some dept...

Crypto cost a lot. At the municipal council, some decision have to be approved before inplantation... Do it's possible to you to check at the toronto city hall web site ?

Those change are long and dificult...

Camerio: You are probably the only Quebecois on this site. CUM (yes this is the name of the Mtl PD, MUC for the blokes) Police are sadly joining the modern age and moving to trunking.

I grew up in Montreal and would like 2 know more about which systems use what now. Do the P.D. still call dispatch in both Francais quinze- vignt quat, fidteen twenty-four.



As for T.P.S. Those supposedly in the know have mentioned on the Yahoo site that there is no changeover to digital or encryption, save for a few new t/g's for surveillance.

I'm trying to find some info here on programming for the TPS trunked system. Could somebody point me in the correct direction?

This is with regard to setting up a Uniden BC245XLT.

Everything is listed there.

I have set up my BC245 XLT using one Site (geographic zone)
per bank Bank 1 =South, Bank 2= North etc..etc..

I fill in the unused channels with non-trunk, but related stuff
like TTC,media, or various security freq's for instance .(whatever you're interested in)
Make sure you are in E2-800 Trunking mode when programming
your freq's. I like it in trunk search mode as opposed to creating
scan lists( again this is personal preference,see what you prefer)
When something is going down that I want to concentrate on, I disable
the other banks and listen to the action on only that one bank until the
situation plays itself out.

Just a little down the page.

When I had my BC 245 I used to make up several sbu files for the Manitoba Saskatchewan region to program my scanner for traveling back and forth on holidays. Just be sure to make up a file of how your scanner is programmed now.

Going digital i dont think so. they dont even have a helicopter! I think investing in a helo would be better than going digital.

Yes. Each of the trunking banks contain 10 scan lists. Each of those
lists contain 10 ID's You may create your own lists manually.

to enter the 5008 ID

Press MAN

your display should appear similar to this

TRUNK 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10

M
1 - - - - -

Enter 5008 and press E you should now succesfully entered
your first talkgroup.

Repeat these steps over for other talkgroup ID's and create your
own custom lists organized your way.

Refer to page 48 and 49 in the operating guide.

I've heard of Toronto going digital a few years back already ... and that was before OPP was even thinking of it!

Seeing how T EMS just added so much more t/g's to the system only shows us that the system is still capable of a lot more users on it. This only leads to shows us that they do not need to update it.

What are the benefits of the APCO-25-based systems anyway over 800 trunked??? I have not heard someone tell me an educated answer yet.

I have been told by a pal with metro that they are having huge budget problems. So if they need to upgrade their radios I can't see it happening any time soon.
