I was thinking the same thing.

btw, I was on the PD web site all day yesterday while Air 1 was up and never saw a thing and I know they were on at least one call because they were orbiting just north of my house.

Maybe I should have called dispatch to see why it wasn't on the web site ;-)

Thanks Guys for the info, I'm a big fan of things that fly and will like checking this stuff out. I cant really believe that they'd stream their downlinked video. It'd be cool to look at, but it seems a bit compromising for them to reveal a capability like that. Will see how it goes.

i HIGHLY doubt they'd stream the helo feed.

Not only would it give the cover away of officers involved in a tactical situation, pursuit, and serveillance operations, but it would cost way too much money just to stream it on the website. while the idea is cool, the police and sheriff wouldn't spend thousands of dollars (which could used for paying their guys and gals in uniform) on a PR thing.

i can see them streaming recordings of incidents (i've seen a couple training videos on youtube) but not live.

that being said, the next best thing is available in many markets- news chopper streams.

New York and LA fox affiliates stream their chopper's live camera feed live, and sometimes the photog or pilot will even chat with online viewers and answer questions. i wish KCRA and News10 would do this.

News10 no longer has a chopper and I know why KCRA is not big on live streaming and KCRA's chopper may be going the way of News10's soon anyway.

All said I do love it when stations stream chopper video like that.

thats horrible to hear. i watch kcra 3 over all the other stations, itll be a shame to see them get rid of the helicopter, what they really need to do is get rid of dan shively. that guy doesnt know anything he talks about, especially when it comes to him circling police and fire scenes.

thats a shame that news10 got rid of theirs.

KCRA just spent a crap-ton of money on their chopper, outfitting it with HD equipment and a new camera mount.

Absolutely STUPID to get rid of it now.

13 used to have one as i recall... they got rid of it years ago.

the only reason i tune to 3 for breaking news is because of the chopper shots during incidents. now i'd rather watch cbs or fox (whose news director has done a fantastic job of revamping their news)

where did you hear the news of them planning on getting rid of their chopper?

I have worked with Dann on and off for a long time and he is very good at what he does. He has a lot going on in that chopper so it doesn't always show on air.

The chopper is owned by Helinet so if KCRA did not renew the contract they would just move the chopper to another TV station.

Well Dann is nearing retirement and it has been talked about by several people in the news biz for a while now that they will not hire another pilot, also a possibility that the stations could pull together and fund one chopper that is shared by all after he is gone.

I listen to a lot of these incidents with many different scanner channels while watching anything live on KCRA-TV. Dann is incredibly busy up there FLYING and talking to other pilots on Metro Air frequency. He gets most of what he talks about via a UHF frequency with KCRA (usually a producer or director on the other end).

These scenes are quite dynamic and change rapidly. By the time they get to air the situation has changed and what Dann has been told (or not told) may no longer be accurate. I only know differently because I am hearing traffic on other scanner channels that provide details.

But you know, this is NOT new for most news reporters; whether TV, radio, print or pilots. You'll often read "information not available" or "unknown" when an article is posted or broadcast. I usually laugh when I read that because I was monitoring the incident and did hear what the correct information is.

Now if stations want to make a big difference out there with the quality of their work, all reporters and Chryon operators should have to pass some test with regard to where streets are in this county. And people need to check their own work - ever hear of proof reading? Last night I caught something on News10 (make that KXTV) that was keyed "In Their Own Worlds" while the story was about "In Their Own Words". LMFAO

I will miss Dann if he leaves the area/profession.

i should have been more clear. the reporters need to learn technical terms just in general about police and fire. there were plenty of stories over the summer, the next time it happens ill point it out.

but then again they are doing the best they can. and i am biased on my opinions, just because of the fact that i hate today's media. the media now-adays would rather be the first to get the story out, then be correct about it.

back to the original question... i highly doubt that there will be any streaming from police helicopters, it was probably a rumor that was changed as it went down the grapevine.

Heard SPD Air-1 asking for watch commander approval to assist SSD on a call today. That was the first time I have heard them do that in a long time. Anyone know if SPD changed the policy on helping outside agencies with air support?
