Got this from the DFWScan Yahoo group, apparently from a TV station in Sherman, TX. This may be old news to some, but it's new to me.

Subject: SE Oklahoma Troopers

The four most remote unites of the OHP have a clear line of communication
directly to patrol cars via mobile data terminals. Southeastern Oklahoma
terrain often breaks up radio frequencies making it difficult for troopers
to signal back and forth on manhunts. Troopers out of Durant will be able to
type in messages that will link with a satellite sending information
straight back to their cars. Within seconds they will be able to access
warrants, stolen vehicle tags, and communicate with each other in remote
areas. The OHP based out of Durant works seven counties in southeastern
Oklahoma. Four of their cars currently have the new technology. The
remaining 27 will get in the next few weeks.

OHP also expects the laptop systems help out dispatchers by reducing the
amount of radio traffic between troopers and headquarters and freeing up the
lines for 911 calls.

I know that these MDTs are starting to show up in more units around the central Oklahoma area, and I presume, Tulsa, but this is the first I've heard that the outlying Troops are getting them into widespread use also.

Thanks for the post, Mark. Last I knew, it was only the "special troopers" like turnpike and size & weights that had the computers.

I'm curious. Do they have a simplex type operation like the old MDT's or are they linked into their 800 radio system for a more uniform coverage.

As far as I know, there is no 800 MHz in Troop E. I believe this explains: "Troopers out of Durant will be able to type in messages that will link with a satellite sending information straight back to their cars.".

I got to look at the systems the weeks I was at the Brisrtow man hunt, They have a special
satelite link antenna on top. They have an integrated gps system with standard and topo maps. The troopers I talked to said they had coverage everwhere.

Don't take this wrong guys, I'm happy they got their system. However Troop H got a new system the other day as well. It included 2 cans, and a long spool of string. Yes, it's that bad out here. btw, I'm going to be in OKC all day tomorrow and get to listen to a few real modern systems!

I'm wondering how they don't get tangled up in the string...do they have one of those fancy-shmancy retractors that automatically roll up the slack in the string as they get closer?

Too FUNNY! I guess you could mount that drill to the car and have a remote switch inside the car, right?
