Hey folks,
I'm still new here so, please pardon me if this is in the wrong spot. I sort of scanned the titles of all the possible places it could go but, I just didn't think it applied to any particular spot. So, with all that being said, here's my issue. I have two handy-talkies. One the Yeasu VX-170 and the other was just acquired, a Baofeng UV5R. I know, I know, many of you dislike the Baofeng. it's merely a backup in case the Yeasu decides to go south for some odd reason. So, a friend who has Chirp, downloaded a lot of frequencies for me onto the Baofeng.

But, I wanted to setup Chirp for myself so I could make adjustments/alterations etc. at any given time, even though I really don't mind the bit of a challenge it is to manually program either radio. Once you get used to it, I can actually get pretty fast in programming either one. So here's my issue. I get onto Chirps home page and try as diligently as possible, to follow at least one of the youtube videos that shows how to download Chirp. Well, in the many steps, I get to the one where it has a screen that shows the different platforms that each person is to use, base on the type of computer or system they have.

Mine is a lap top that uses Windows 8.1 as an operating system. So, I get to that screen that says to use the highlighted "Windows installer/exe." etc. Just like the gent on the youtube, I click on that but, this is where things go haywire. The gent on youtube clicks on that same line and the next screen shows a line at the very bottom of his screen that says something like "run.....Save....etc. But, after clicking on that highlighted line for me, my next screen does not display that line at th the bottom of my screen. all mine does is go to a box in the middle of the screen that wants me to allow for that program to make adjustments to my computer. I click on it and, for the umpteenth time, my screen automatically goes to my collection of downloads and, a dark blue line appears at the bottom, with something at the far left. If I click on it, the next screen shows the graph that progressed across the box 'till it's done. Then, all that's left when the green graph is done, in that same text box is "Close". I hit close and, THAT'S IT, PERIOD!

There is no Chirp program, no icon on the desk top, nothing accept for a spot in my downloads that indicates chirp is there. If I click on it, the process starts all over again. I got real frustrated last night trying to do, what, on youtube seems to be a really simple program to install. Can someone help here?

Unfortunately I don't use windows so I don't know exactly what people are going through, but I've heard someone else have a similar/same complaint about CHIRP. I suspect what you're running is the installer again, which isn't what you want to run again, if you installed it already.

Based on the win32.zip file, there seems to be a "chirpw.exe" in it, and I think that's what you want to run if you can find it. You may be able to tell Windows to go find that file if you can't find it. I would hope it installs the program somewhere in Program Files/ ... and it should even be in the menus I'd hope.

As an alternative you could just get that win32.zip file, extract it to a directory somewhere, and go into that directory, and doubleclick on chirpw.exe. Again this is all speculation, I do not have windows (or macos for that matter) to experiment with...

Click on the "Start" icon (lower left corner) and look for CHIRP in the popup window. Click on CHIRP to launch the program.

Well Sir, I did what you suggested but, on my laptop, there is no "popup" screen when I click on the start button. All I get is what you see in the picture below. I appreciate you trying to help.

Unless someone here has a suggestion, might be best to check the Chirp mailing list:
chirp_users Info Page
W9BU,
I tried to get into or on, the Chirp mailing list but, they have such a confusing website it's hard to decipher. I thought I followed the instructions flawlessly and yet, I was "denied" entrance to their mailing list for odd reasons. I'll try again. Man, all I want to do is program my radio.

I think you can slide the screen up or something on windows 8, in that lower panel should contain chirp -- if the installer did its thing. Again no warranties expressed or implied -- I do not have windows.

Download - CHIRP

  • Windows users will want the installer.exe file
Index of /chirp_daily/LATEST **(Click on the hilighted green area of the picture)**

if this dosent work find out from the friend who did your radio and ask what chirp program he used and operating system of the p/c

good luck my friend

Right click on your "desk top" and create a new shortcut. Point the shortcut to "C:\Program Files (x86)\CHIRP\chirpw.exe"

If that's not where CHIRP is, you can browse around. Also, whatever file manager you're using surely has a find option; you can use it to find chirpw.exe

If I remember correctly when you put the cursor all the way to the right side of the screen, you should get a pop up screen (you may need to click as well). Anyway this should allow you to conduct a search for Chirp. Then once you find it, then you can move it to the desktop.
