Is the speaker on a trx 1 a good speaker & is the traffic a clear sound & not muffled?

Yes, the speaker on my TRX-1 is very clear, but there are a lot of variable values involved that impact one's level of satisfaction with any radio's speaker. There's the signal quality of the system you're monitoring, digital vs analog signals, your listening environment (e.g. mobile vs home monitoring), personal preferences regarding bass and treble balance, etc. In the end, there's a lot of subjectivity involved in determining how well any radio speaker works for you.

My only complaint about the TRX-1's speaker quality is that P25 Phase 2 signals are categorically much louder than non-Phase 2 digital signals.

Depends on what you're listening to. Analog modulation is a much different animal than digital...
