Using a trx-2, what is the best way to get the fastest scans of a trunked system? Is it better to lock out or skip unwanted talk groups? I've got a state wide system with many unwanted talk groups, and I'm looking to improve my over all scan rate. And is it better to have just one site selected? Any help appreciated.

Generally speaking, it doesn't really matter when it comes to P25 systems. The scanner is decoding the control channel, not actually scanning through dozens or hundreds of talkgroups, and so it's only going to respond to talkgroup "voice grants" that come across the control channel.

What is important, though, is that you're only scanning the sites that you're actually capable of receiving well. Having more than one site enabled is going to slow scanning down, and will likely lead to missed activity as the scanner has to reacquire the control channel for each site as it scans between them. Ideally you want to monitor a single site, and probably no more than two if you have good reception of both. Another factor is the talkgroups you want to hear, which may not be carried on all sites, so that factors into the decision to scan more than one site, if you're lucky enough to have good reception of more than one.

I've always wondered why the more recent GRE designs have both, a Skip and a Lockout setting. What is the difference?

The only difference I can see is that there is a "remove all skipped" function... so I expect that if an object is "locked out" that it won't be affected by the Skip / Unskip function.

That makes perfect sense. Thanks for seeing what I missed!

I think skipped come back when you shut down and power back on, Lockout, stay locked out.

On my TRX-2 the skipped ones continue to be skipped even after power off/on and I guess the reason could be that Uniden holds the patent for a temporary avoids funcionality that restore skipped frequencies/TG's when changing scanlists or power off/on.

That's what I see as well. This was the reason for asking as both functions seemed identical until K9DAK mentioned the "remove all skipped" item which I've clearly overlooked since day one.

That's the way the older 106 / 197 / 1040 / 1065 models work... on those L/O is temporary until power off / on... Func-L/O is permanent.

I think skipped come back when you shut down and power back on, Lockout, stay locked out.

If you mark them SKIP during programming they remain skipped unless you use unskip function. However, if you skip them while scanning they resume scanning after you power off and back on.

Exactly, I was referring to the SKIP/Lockout button on the trx-2. not via ezscan. Which as you pointed out SKIP has the same name, but function slightly different via the keypad.

On mine I still have to use the "restore skipped" function in the menu for stuff I've skipped while scanning. I'd love to know how to make them restore on power down/power up. As mentioned above, the GRE500 types had this ability with L/O's, if you wanted it permanent you had to use the FUNC key, otherwise they came back at the next power up. And with "restore skipped" I get everything back that I had skipped, including some stuff that I would just as soon remained skipped.

Maybe I'm just missing something though.

My GRE PSR500 restores talkgroups that I have locked during scanning after turning off & on.

It's different in TRX scanners.

Button Options:

Skip Button Function
This setting determines the action of the Skip button when pressed while in scan mode and stopped on an active channel.

Skip: In this mode, the currently active object will be added to the skip list. Channels set to skip may be easily unlocked using the option located in the scanner's menu. This is the default setting.

Lockout: In this mode, the channel will be set to permanent lockout status. Once a channel is locked out in this fashion, the only way to remove the lockout is to locate and edit the channel in the scanner's interface, or through the use of the PC Application.

The TRX ezscan lets you make the skip button a "SKIP" button or "LOCKOUT"

One or the other, but not both.

They will function as Ubbe explained in post #14 of this thread.

Will the TRX1 show Radio ID's, and can you enter the ID as an object to be scanned?
The Trx will show radio ID's if you set up the display to do so, You should be able scan ID's as ezscan allows you to input them, but I have never done it.
