TRX-2 Unboxing

Since I have not seen much talk about the TRX-2 I thought I'd buy one and give it a go.

As you see the boxes are looking really good, they package the unit very well into the interior boxing and the scanner comes with everything you need to get up and running fast. Even has its own mounting bracket for the remote head!!!

So, I took it all out shot some photos and then plugged it in. I then turned it on and entered my zip code and was off scanning in less than five minutes.

I have updated the Firmware, DSP and PC app. The scanner in bringing in DMR like a champ, receiving EDACS really well and also doing great on a P25 system I loaded really fast for testing.

Now, I have to learn how to use this software a little more and program the unit the way I want to use it. I will not be installing this unit in my vehicle until winter. I will post photos of that when the time comes.

Also keep in mind I'm located in the middle of the woods using the stock extendable antenna that came with the unit.

Personally, I'm very impressed with the reception so far on the systems I have been testing.

Sounds great! I thought my 1088 didn't work as well as my PRO-106 on our EDACS system, heard bits of control channel buzz occasionally which I never heard on the 106, but that's a moot point since Tuesday that system was abandoned in favor of an encrypted Phase II system.

I have been using a Uniden HP-1 and the BCD436 for a few years now. They do good on the systems I have shown above, but not as well as the TRX-2 so far. The audio is clear and no missing things so far. I am still waiting for a P25 system to come to life here. I think I might need to move to another room and see if that helps. If not, tomorrow I will switch antennas and see where that goes. I did hear the P25 system earlier in my testing which was in another room.

I think you will get better results with the TRX-2 with a nice antenna on the back of the radio or putting an antenna on your roof.

I used my Galaxy S5 Note to take the photos which were on point like all the photos I take.

Call me picky, but I wish they had stuck to the matte black ABS for the front panel. I don't care for the metallic finish. Oh well, as long as the scanner functions well, I can overlook that easily. Looking forward to getting on on order soon.

So, I have been playing with the TRX2 and switched the antenna to a mini mag mount antenna and the sound quality is solid. I have not changed any settings for audio as of yet on the scanner so what you see and hear in the videos is with all factory settings.

Last night I had made my own DMR conventual channels into a scan list and was not receiving anything on them using the stock antenna. So, I deleted those channels and imported the channels from RRDB. While using the stock antenna those channels came in but were broken up. I plan on doing this DMR manual channel testing with the mini mag antenna here soon and then taking the scanner for a ride and hooking it to my sbb2 antenna.

In this video you will also notice that on the VSP P25 Phase l system the scanner has a little issue scanning the Channel one of the system I'm scanning, it blinks rapidly with no sound coming out.

Also, if anyone happens to have the ezscan software that came with their TRX2 unit and would like to share it with me I'd be very grateful. I had to format my card last night since Whistler scanners and the software is new to me and I unplugged the card before the scanner was done. Now, I strictly program the card using the reader of the PC....lol
