I recently decided to "throw in the towel" and purchased a newer pc to run some of the more recent sdr software available. My old reliable radio pc, the Dell Optiplex, with its on-board graphics, was being rejected by the latest SDR# software update as well as by SDR++. Since I have an Airspy HF+ Discovery, it was starting to become a problem not being able to use newer software. I installed the latest version of SDR# and found that it works quite well and I'm more than happy with it.
SDR++ was a nice surprise since it runs in both Debian Linux (and I assume Ubuntu versions as well) and Windows 10. One must read the sdr++ installation instructions carefully, since other file "dependencies" must be met before installing the program in Linux.
SDR++ is really fun to use but it lacks one feature that is a "showstopper" for me. It's noise blanking ability seems non-existent and that places it in the realm of something to just toy with at this QTH. I have to use a blanker because of utility noise here, and if a program doesn't have that capability, it's going to be on the "back burner", so to speak. I'm hoping that as the author continues to work on it, that it will incorporate an effective blanker. In all fairness though, the author states upfront that the blanker is "a work in progress".
Another interesting (and maybe little known) progarm to use with the Airspy HF+ is a small program called uSDR or microsdr. It's really very "lightweight" since it doesn't use/need other libraries to make it work. It is said it can even run on windows as far back as XP. It's quite "bare bones" but it's still fun to tinker with. Again, since it lacks a blanker at this time, it's another program "not ready for prime time" at my location. Look for more info on uSDR on the 'net at rtl-sdr.com, as well as Sourceforge for the download.
